Why did you chose your tow vehicle poll

I have read a lot of blogs about different tow vehicle attributes. I would like to know what made you chose your current tow vehicle. Take a moment before you vote to decide what was the one true factor in making your decision. You may be surprised at the outcome of the poll.
You will be able to make two selections on the poll. One for vehicle brand the other for reasons for choice.

At the time I bought my truck I worked for a gm dealer as a tech. While working for the dealer I could get paid to perform warranty repairs on my on vehicle(if needed). Plus I got a heck of a discount. I know gm's in and out once out of warranty I can perform almost any repair or service in my drive.

I chose mine for a number of reasons. First I looked for price as I could not afford a new one. Second I looked for a 1 ton as I tow some heavier stuff and wanted a solid platform with duals on rear. I did a lot of research on dependability of drivetrain and came to the conclusion at the time with the money I had I bought a 1995 f 350 crew cab long box dually with the 7.3 diesel and a manual 5 speed overdrive tranny. It was a Centaurus conversion which looked really nice and had the amenities of course from 95 era lol, but it has been a good truck. I worked for Chevy dealership for years and I love the dura max platform , but at the time they were way expensive for me and I had heard they were having to have injectors replaced at 100000 or so miles which was a big expense. I have since heard if Chevy had put a smaller micron filter on them at the time this wouldn't have been a problem but our fuel here in the states isn't as refined as in Europe. I also liked the cummins platform and heard they were a good performer and good on fuel but I just didn't have any experience to speak of with them. Bottom line is I got what I could afford and thought would pull what I needed and have been happy with my choice so far.

The tow was purchased months before we even considered a TT.


SWMBO had to replace her aging 4Runner and bought a brand-new Tacoma. We were still tent camping at that point.


I found a very well loved 25 year old TT several months later. That TT didn't survive this past (very harsh) winter. So, we're hauling a 5' longer and 32 year more up-to-date TT with the same Tacoma.

First and foremost since I was looking for a half ton... PAYLOAD! I wouldn't touch anything with less than 1500lbs. This cut the majority of available trucks out, which the salesmen at the dealerships just couldn't understand because they are dumb.

I needed good towing power and good fuel mileage unloaded, and didn't want to venture into the diesel world just yet. The obvious choice was the EcoBoost engine.

I wanted a crew cab with as much interior space as possible, and the F-150 crew cab was the obvious choice for that. The back seat is HUGE and leads the half ton market for sure, maybe even the 3/4 or 1 ton too.

Then it was box length, 4WD, gear ratios, tow mirrors, all the other little things... I searched high and low across the entire province and finally found everything I wanted in a '13 at the end of the year. Flew there, picked it up and drove it home.

i choose a tundra because we had three toyotas including a tacoma that pulled our first trailer. they were all trouble free, comfortable, cost effective, and had good resale value even after many kms. the tundra is great and fits our needs perfectly.

I bought my Toyota Tacoma before we decided to get a travel trailer. A friend at a local dealership told me about it (it was a lightly used trade-in) and I got a great deal on it. Its a 2007 that just hit 40,000 miles. When buying our travel trailers we've kept in mind what the Tacoma can tow.

Most of the research I did regarding a solid and dependable tow vehicle routinely came back to the Tacoma. I just felt personally a full sized truck was more than what I needed for 10-11 months of the year since I only get out for about 30 nights camping. Most of our camping is local here in Ontario, the US (NY/Maine) and maybe Quebec, but we are going to Nova Scotia again this summer. I know the truck won't set any speed records and I definitely will not pull this HTT of ours around the Cabot Trail and I cruise at 60 - 65 mph anyway to be safe, but for those few larger hill climbs I will have, especially when coming home via Vermont, I'm very comfortable to drop the tranny down into 3rd or even 2nd gear to keep the pulling power up. After all, it's what the Tacoma Rep is all about. Built to tow.

Aside from all that, it's also my daily driver. so a V6 is much easier on my pocket book than a big ol Hemi or V8 any day. LOL

All that said: If I could find me a cheap and older 2500HD or F250, I'd park it and use it strictly for towing. Some day I'll want to step up to a larger and newer TT.

Got the 2015 2500 HD LTZ, Diesel, had all the bells and whistle , plus like the On-Star and exhaust brake feature.

Love the Duramax Allison combo and it's reliability, had it in the SENECA and it was great. Pulling a GCVW of almost 29,000 it never hesitated. When I was managing a fleet and Ford made it's engine change it soured me from even looking else where.

I got mine specifically for the Pentastar V6 - 8 speed combo which is fuel efficient for the 90%-plus portion of the time we are not towing. The towing capability is not too shabby either for what we are towing.

We got the Outdoorsman trim which gives us what we need inside and out.

Why did I switch to Ford after having GM's virtually all my life?
1. Ford options not available on other brands
2. Rebate being offered at the time
3. Courtesy and customer attention.
Two other GM dealers in the area, and the other Ford dealer acted like they didn't care if they sold me a vehicle or not, especially after they found out that they did not have the vehicle on their lot that I wanted. When they found out that I wanted to order one like I wanted, you would have thought I had the Ebola virus.
The dealer I did go with is 16 miles farther away than the other dealer, but they were abslutely customer oriented. They wer very careful to make sure the options I wanted were available. Now, 8 months into the new vehicle, we are very satisfied.
I think I chose the right vehicle for the 5'er we got.

Because the Avalanche is the Swiss army knife of trucks and the big block in the 2500 makes it even more versatile !!

Chose the Tundra DBL cab for the horse power and tow rating. The TT isn't big enough to justify a diesel ( even though I'd love one). And my dealer kind of likes to dicker. This is our second Tundra, and a RAV4 for the DW. I guess that's brand loyalty.

Bought my TT just because I already had a sierra 2500 hd duramax. If not I may have considered a MH.

We chose to go the SUV route. Our TT is about 4600lb dry. Since about 99% of everything we take can fit into the TT and we always take our dog, the SUV just seemed to be a better fit. We chose the Yukon because it has a great track record and a powerful motor and drive train.. The one we found was at a good cost and already had a tow package installed..

I chose the Duramax Allison combination for reliability. I also like the ride. I was a Ford man until I bought a 6.0 diesel Ford. That motors problems probably soured a lot of Ford owners. I hope Fords new diesel proves to be less trouble. Ford has a lot good features on their trucks.

Payload was the number one reason we upgraded.
Test drove Ford F250 and Ram 2500. GM/Chevy dealer was too far away.
Ram rode nicer but liked the interior, options, and visibility of the Ford a lot better. Price was also better at the time.
I made the sale conditional on the payload of the truck though as he kept quoting the brochure payload number and it was on a different lot.

We ended up with a 2000 Ford F-350 Dually 4x4 with the 7.3. We bought because we were going to get a fifth wheel and wanted something solid and dependable. At the time, my father was buying a class C motorhome and would not be towing anymore, so we bought his truck. I got the benefit of buying a used truck that I had driven since it was new. It is old, but that 7.3 is still a dependable engine. It has been modded and will continue to be modified to fit what I want, so I don't see a newer model being bought for quite some time. We currently tow a 2015 Jayco Seismic 3712
