Freon Recharge for Roof Mounted AC units?

Our rear roof AC is blowing hot air and I'm guessing it needs a freon refill.
One freightliner dealer said he thought couldn't be recharged! Has anyone had them serviced?

Without a rear ladder, some people won't service them. What have people done? Also, what freon are they using in these units?

Thanks in advance for your help.

They don't have recharge ports.

for the layman... that is true... for the HVAC professional, they do... it is pinched off and sweated back.

I just had both my units replaced due to lost refrigerant. Most rv shops will not repair these units as they don’t have the equipment or license to do this. In my case as soon as I opened the case on the roof I saw oil below the piping. This is compressor oil and could only come from within the sealed unit. So the dealer said there was nothing they could do. I kept one of the units and going to see if I can locate someone to fix the leak and charge the system. Before you go too far are you hearing the compressor cycle on? To test turn the unit on low ac (not auto) setting the temperature on thermostat to above current temp. Allow the fan to come on and run for a while. Then lower the thermostat temp to 3-4 degrees below ambient and wait a few seconds you should hear the compressor pop on. If you don’t hear the compressor it is possible you just need a new capacitor. There is also a freeze circuit that can be a problem.

They're sealed units but yes, I've heard of people recharging them. But if it needs freon, that means the freon went somewhere...so there's a leak. Fix the leak first then recharge if ya want.

Most RV techs and shops will not, because they lack the license. They will just replace the entire unit. They sell a saddle tap to do that, but you would have to do it yourself. Heavy fines if caught.
