Getting Older - Page 3

While we are not quite yet in the retirement camp and still both work M-F, that limits our traveling to Saturday/Sunday in our Seneca for our 2-8 month trips. We typically will load up the Toyota the late-afternoon on Friday before our departure and usually are pushing the 10AM or 11AM check out times on Saturday morning.

When we are departed and on the road, we make a mandatory trailer check in the first 50 Miles... DW still has not kicked the Smoking habit, so that stop includes her having a smoke, refilling our dash coffee travel mugs from the coffee pot in the kitchen, and hitting our Seneca's bathroom. This first stop is never under 20 minutes and sometimes might be in a truck stop while grabbing a days worth of fuel, that sometimes takes a little longer. From there, it's hammer down for the next couple of hours until my bladder needs attention. By then, DW is ready for a smoke and I am ready for a snack. We try to make this stop at some interesting point of interest, scenic stop or dog friendly place they can get rid of their breakfast. We find some interesting places and don't rush this stop...

The rest of the Saturday leg is heading to our Saturday overnight stop... be it a RV-park pull-thru or a Walmart Parking lot, we are not unloading the Toyota off the trailer.

Depending on the location of the next fuel stop, we may have gotten fuel before we stopped for the night. Sunday is pretty much a carbon-copy of Saturday... If we arrive late in the afternoon on Sunday at our destination, we may not unload the Toyota until the next Monday, and only hook up the 50A service and our Internet Sunday night... Monday is waiting for the rest of the work...

Just completed a 4+ month trip from west to east and back. Noticed some confusion with 81yo DH with driving, so I took over (76). Average anywhere from 98-300 miles per day and made sure we did or saw something each day we traveled. The 300 mile days were tiring and not frequent. 200 seemed best.

In my early 20's, delivered a small truck from Camden, NJ to Hollywood, CA in 63 hours. Was actually bummed that nothing was seen of the desert due to darkness.

Now mid-70's, DW early 70's and we do 2 over-nites from NC to PA visiting my mother and sister. 300-350 per day and we have been using the same 2 campgrounds the last few trips. Knowing where we are going and stopping is a relief as we are traveling to destination, not enjoying an open trip. Harrisburg- Shenandoah KOA is one of our go-to stops and our favorite campground.

Well, we no longer pull the trailer....we've moved on to seasonal and drive the CRV for 2 hours to get there and then return when ready. A far cry from back in the day when I was an iron butt doing 750 miles a day on an H-D softail (which is a lie, they aren't soft at all) to get from OH to Spearfish in two days. Without a helmet.

Those were the good days for me. In my 30's I rode my 1975 FLH shovel from Marquette mi to Sturgis in 2 days. A hair over a thousand miles. This was early 80's when Sturgis was just starting to boom. You out did me.
