Random Sewer odor

We have always battled a faint black tank odor around our front bathroom since new. I had changed the toilet base gasket, Air Admittance valve under the sink, which was bad, but driving in certain wind directions or boondocking after about 7-10 day, we would smell it. Well others have found open gaps around their roof vent pipes and roof panels so thought I would check……now I know where it was coming from. The vent cap is a 2 piece, base and cap. The vent pipe should stick up through the base, providing a decent seal, and then the cap screws on. 3 out of 4 vents were correct with the pipe sticking through the base but the vent for the front black tank was cut to short, leaving about a 3/16” gap and then once the base was removed, I found a very oversized hole was never sealed. Now it gets even better, when they drilled the hole in the roof, they drilled through the AC ductwork, both the grey and black vents were drilled through the ductwork. So at times, we were getting sewer gas seeping into our AC ductwork causing the smell and making it hard to pinpoint. Foam was an easy solution for the gap but didn’t want it going into the AC ducting so I used some Dollar Store cutting mat material and fit it down around the duct cutout and vent pipe, then foamed it in sealing it all off. I then installed a better vent cap, using the Lippert 360 siphon cap……hopefully we will finally be rid of that faint smell that I always though was from my wife.

Great find and another example of shoddy workmanship. Proving that no matter how well you think you know your rig there are still things to learn!

Glad you got it figured out!

This is one of the first things I fixed on our 2017 as I kept smelling the same thing when boondocking in the summer. After the fix it all went away.

Did you send those pictures off to Jayco to let them know about this poor assembly? I'm betting this is the same for many more unit builds like yours.

They may not know its happening. This could be a health issue as well.

21 Accolade 37K. We had similar occasional smell. Bought a set of those 360 vent caps, hoping to cure the issue. When I pulled the black tank vent cap for the half bath, found that the vent pipe was 3/4” short of the roof skin. It was not near the A/C duct, but the smell could get into the ceiling and insulation. I used a non leveling sealant and coated around inside the opening to make it “air tight” so smell goes out the vent like it’s supposed to.
Just another item on the fixed-it list.

Just like everyone else we would sometimes get a sewer smell.
I put one of the 360 Siphon on Old Brown (2006 Seneca) and finally got around to putting one on this one.
Was surprised to see the size of the hole they cut, but it is all sealed now.

It makes absolutely no sense for them to cut off the vent pipes shorter that the jack height. The good news is the hole they drilled is large enough for an abs coupler once you square up the bad cut and it makes it easier to caulk.

I haven't tried those vent covers yet but I've really noticed the difference on the odors with the standard ones.

Bringing this thread back to the top. While my A/C fix helped a bit with the sewage smell when parked, it was back again as soon as we drove. I see that a few of you have 4 vents on your rigs, is that with the half bath. I don't have my 2022 37M at the house and want to order the vents, I believe the 37M may only have 3.

A few have suggest the Camco Cyclone over the 360 vents. Seems like both will fit...

Should be a vent for each holding tank. I changed all 4 of our vents to 360 and they have worked great so far.

Thanks, after I wrote it, I thought about the number of tanks on mine vs. the bath and a half... 37M's do not have the 4th tank that would be a black water tank.

Trying to decide on cyclone vs. regular 360.
