Seneca Cruise Control Behavior

Hi all -

I've noticed some quirks with the cruise control in our Seneca and wanted to see if anyone else has experienced the same behaviors. When ascending grades, the cruise doesn't seem to want to downshift readily - I have to stomp on the gas pedal to force it to downshift or it'll just lug up the hill losing a significant amount of speed before finally downshifting. The more concerning behavior, however, is when descending grades. The cruise doesn't seem to allow the throttle to close completely which keeps the engine brake from engaging. As a result, we continue to accelerate until I hit the brakes to disengage the cruise.

These don't seem normal to me and I plan to talk with the Freightliner folks about it when I take it in for the pre-season oil and filter changes.

anav8or, if you were in overdrive going up a long and/or steep grade that might be the problem. Engine needs to be revving or you'll slow down a lot and potentially overheat the trans.

Don't have any experience with going downhill in cruise…never did that. Always descended with cruise off.

Not sure if you have an "overdrive" switch, but if so as Waltw said you need to turn it off when you first hit the hill. Also on the down grade it may not engage the engine brake until it hits 3 or 4 mph over the set speed.

That is just about how mine does too, I do use the OD cancel switch on the steeper grades when it slows about 5 mph. I relocated my OD switch closer to me so I don't have to reach as far as I did originally.

When coasting downhill I tap the brake and then the exhaust brake will engage. But like yours, with the cruise "On" it just picks up speed!

Thanks for the info, guys. It didn't occur to me to hit the overdrive switch as we approach an uphill grade, but it makes sense.

I'm in the habit of kicking off the cruise on the downhills now, but it took me by surprise the first couple of times.

My cruise acts the exact same way. I just don't use it in hills that are steep enough to require a downshift out of overdrive.
