Seneca master bed plywood finish

Since getting my Seneca in June of this year one of the items that completely disappointed me was the lack of a finished edge on the master bed plywood base having suffered many splinters from the rough plywood edge... I figured I would share in case others are tired of splinters also.

I looked all over Homedepot for a molding solution and found nothing.

I ended up finding an automotive solution using Trim-lok described below with an Amazon link included.


Trim-Lok Edge Trim – PVC Plastic Edge Protector – Easy Install, Push-On Edge Guard for Cars, Boats, Machinery, and More – Fits 3/8” Edge, 5/8” Leg Length, Single Gripping Finger, 25’ Length

I had to move the 2x2 at the foot of the bed back to accommodate / make room for the Trim-lok at the foot of the bed. Moved it back just inside where the staples were and pulled the old staples out of the plywood and used #8 1inch wood screws to secure the 2x2 back onto the foot of the bed.

Hint: I installed the Trim-lok with the locking ridge on the bottom of the plywood incase i needed to secure the Trim-lok further with staples but thus far it does not need it. Caveat: I just installed it today.

Nice work - and I agree that leaving an unfinished edge was poor craftsmanship. Definitely will add this to my project list, I'm considering strengthening that entire platform anyway before I place a new mattress - another 2019 project!

I was thinking about adding gas shocks for a lift assist on the bed but think it would need some substantial shoring up before doing that and would want to figure placement so it would hold the bed up w/o the oem metal prop rod.

You're in luck....I finished that project today...I will post pictures tomorrow....

Looks good! Must be an FS model, none of the other floor plans with a bed in the slideout can use lift cylinders attached that way.

Before Jayco switched to a Schwintec slideout it was possible to anchor the cylinders to the Power Gear slideout trolley and make it functional, but no trolley in the Schwintec. Too bad, it is sooooo much easier with cylinders!

It was even bigger originally, but the picture shows it after I reduced it to a queen size bed. Much easier to get around it but still plenty of sleeping room.

Do you have part numbers? Did the shocks come with the brackets?

How did you attach the plywood bed base to the block where the gas shock is attached to the bed?

I used pipe insulation from Home Depot. It's much softer than plastic when I frequently hit with my knee or shin. Your solution looks more elegant though.

My Precept is the same, no mldgs around the bed frame, already ordered 1 edge mldgs from the link provided at Amazon and will install when received, this make a nice finish and no more pulling tread on bed sheet. Thanks for this info.

My Jayco 18 SRB Jay Feather is 4 years old with an unfinished edge plywood base for the bed. No splinters, no abrasions, no trauma, so far.

I followed your lead and expanded the effort from just adding trim to the bed, to applying a cover to the bare plywood. My first thought was to paint the the surface, but did not think that would be the best idea.

We have a 2018.5 37TS and I purchased the trim you recommended. Prior to installation I decided to cover the surface of the bed platform with stick-on tiles prior to application of the trim. I used inexpensive tiles for both the price and the thickness. I feared the trim may not fit over a thick tile.

I also installed struts. Several people have asked for a parts list. I have include a picture of the list and the installation. The details are - struts (20" - 90 LBS) and the connection parts.
