1971 Jayco tire size?

I have a 1971 Jayco tandem-axle camper. 20 foot long, model Jay-Raven. It is 1000 miles from me and sitting in a woods in the NY Adirondacks. I need to find what size tires it takes so I can bring a set with me. Anybody have any idea? I called Jayco headquarters and no good. No info before 1991.

Based on the weight I would guess that you have 13 inch tires

You need to find out infor if the axles take 4 or 5 lug rims.

I really don't like making guesses but felt the information would be of some help

If no info available tow it to the nearest tire shop. It might save you some hassle of bringing the wrong stuff with you.

There isn't any nearby tire-shop and I'm not going to drag this camper for 30 miles down a public highway with flat tires. Thus the reason why I'm trying to ascertain ahead of time what size tires it takes.

Thanks, I saw that info. Still trying to verify tire-size instead of guess. Close as I've come is for a Jayco model-year 1973 dual-axle that uses ST185/80 D13" tires. Seems the 1971 ought to be the same but I'd really like to know for sure.

If as you say "flat tires" there should be someway to find out what size they are. One other thing you may want to check before towing the TT Pull the hubs and check the brake shoes to make sure they don't fall apart from sitting so long back in the woods.

I'm not worried about the brakes. I can easily tow a 3000-3500 lb. trailer with no working brakes and do fine. I just towed a 6500 lb. trailer from NY to MI with no brakes behind my truck with no issues. Just concerned about having sound tires on Jayco camper. I have no idea how/why you think my concern for bad/flat tires translates into knowing the tire size. I'm 1000 miles away and have no way to look at them, flat or not. I'm trying to ascertain the tire size so I can get new or good tires and bring them with me when I travel to where the camper is. I bought this camper in 1979 and never touched the tires. So now it's 36 years later and this camper has not been towed in 15 years. Stands to reason the tires will be dry-rotted and not road-worthy.

bedrck46 gave some very good advice about the brakes. In most states including Michigan it is against the law to tow a trailer over 3000 lbs without a braking system. You might not really care about the correct and safe way of doing things but the person you hit when you can't stop your truck and trailer in time sure isn't going to like it but their lawyer will. Oh by the way the tires you need are 175/80-13.

My suggestions about the brakes was to have you check them. I just purchased a used 2004 Jay Feather that had been sitting idle in a campground for some time. Went to have it inspected which is required in PA and when the Tech pulled one wheel the bonded lining on the shoe came right off. Wasn't happy that it happened but looked on the bright side. Better it happen while parked than to have it come loose at 65 mph. BTW when I checked out the other brakes another one did the same thing. Although you may feel you don't have to have the brakes working, just think what can happen if a brake shoe or two come loose while you are hauling it 1000 miles at highway speeds.

I wasn't trying to translate that your need for tires translated that you should know the tire size but rather that you find a way to ascertain the size by having someone check them for you. If that was possible. And only you can answer why you don't know the tire size. Just trying to offer you suggestions.

Good luck in finding the tire size and towing it 1000 miles.

The Jayco camper is in the middle of the woods in a remote area of the NY Adirondack mountains. Thus the reason why I've been searching for tire-size info instead of having someone just go and look at the camper. And as aforementioned - I'm nearly 1000 miles away.

I don't have to tow it 1000 miles either. Just 120 miles from one spot in NY to another. Legal or not - my tow vehicle weighs 6500 lbs. and I can safely tow a 3000 lb. camper regardless if the trailer-brakes work or not. Stopping is not an issue. It would be a bonus if those trailer-brakes are operational - but if not - it is not a concern of mine.

Thanks for the tire sizes. Exactly what I've been seeking.

You may not be concerned if they work or not. And most likely you will make the move without any problems but I would be concerned if (and that's a big if) something would go wrong. We all know our own limitations but its the unknown that always bites us in the ***. Again good luck
