2015 F-250 recent towing observation

I traded up to a F-250, 6.7L Diesel from a 2011 F-150, 3.5L echoboost. I loved the F-150 echoboost. It is a great truck and engine-lots of power. I had the 7100 GVWR and had very little left over for cargo etc. towing the 2013 26BH. I just wanted more payload capability since I was close to my max.

I looked around to upgrade to a F-150 with max payload with the GVWR to match but was not able to find one nor was the dealer in his search of the area. It apparently is a special order vehicle since it is listed as a "commercial" truck with the max payload package.

My F-150 when towing averaged approx. 8-9mpg, driving without the trailer around town I would get about 15-17 miles and 22 mpg on the hwy.

I just returned from my recent trip with the 2015, F-250 (3.31) and when towing I averaged between 13.5 and 14 mpg. Driving around town (no trailer) I averaged 15 mpg and on the highway about 21.2 mpg. I was a little surprised that the mpg I got with the F-250 were just a little shy from the F-150. I knew the diesel is much better for towing but just surprised I did as well as I did without the trailer.

I see mpg in the 12's and 13's when towing and 20 or a little better cruising down the interstate. We pulled our 1st TT (X23B) with a Ford Expedition with the 5.4 and usually it gave us mileage in the 9's. I was also surprised at the difference, 30% better mileage and 3x the weight.
The 6.7 is an OX and it loves to pull!

Trying to compare MPG's between gasoline and Diesel engines starts to enter apples vs. oranges territory.

While they are both 4-stroke, internal combustion engines, they introduce the fuel based on different needs.

A gas engine MUST have a properly proportioned mixture of air and fuel to operate properly. The computer is responsible for making sure the mixture is correct for operating conditions.

A Diesel engine adds fuel to get more power. The mixture is constantly changing and not totally relevant to proper operation. Too little fuel in the mixture and the engine won't produce the power the driver expects. Too much and you get black smoke (unburnt fuel) out the tailpipe.

I've been driving a Diesel-powered car (stick-shift VW Jetta) for over 2 years and love it. I get close to 50 MPG on ULS (much more expensive than regular gas).

A gasoline fueled vehicle will get xxMPG under certain conditions as long as the drivers generally drive in a similar fashion. A Diesel powered vehicle is MUCH more sensitive to the driver. Take it easy with starts. Coast to stops. Don't go over the speed limit. Etc. You might see 10-12% improvement in MPG in a gasoline vehicle. Those changes in a Diesel, 20-30% improvement in fuel economy. Really work at it and you can double your MPG's on a Diesel. But you can forget about enjoying the ride.

Depends on where you are...

Where I'm at here in Ohio, ULS diesel is $2.39/gal while regular unleaded is $2.45! I've been watching diesel pricing for a few weeks now, and it's mostly been less than regular. It also doesn't seem to change as much as unleaded.

We're looking at a Touareg TDI to replace my wife's Vibe GT (which takes premium). Not to mention the Touareg will have more towing capacity than my Ridgeline.

This is our mpg's on a recent trip to Florida with the F-250, not towing. I know it's computer calculated but each fill up usually came within 1 or 2/10's of a gallon from what the computer was showing. We were doing 80 to 85 unless slowed by traffic. At 55 to 60mph, the truck has logged mileage in the 21 to 22mpg range. I get about 12 towing our 10k Eagle.Click image for larger version
