2015 jay flight slx 287bhsw modifications

Hi, everyone, bought a jay flight slx 287 bhsw in September , like the layout very much but was not satisfied with the very few options available, managed to bring the price down to $17900, plus traded in 2004 sunline sole 25bh for $4000, the money saved went into upgrading the unit, installed Maxfann in the bathroom, put partition wall between slide through storage and queen bed, installed gas struts on the queen bad frame to keep it open when storing items, added Hybrid heat- electric to hot water heater with a wall on/ off switch next to a gas DSI switch, closed the underbelly with Jayco polypropylene material + double sided foil insulation, ran 2" duckwork to heat the underbelly , also installed 12v tank heaters on all tanks, upgrading to wfco 8935 to handle additional 12v requirments, made access door to the underbelly to gain access to slide out mechanism in case of power failure and change the 100 watt bulb in a lap serving as an additional heat source, will install wall thermostat for hvac to control AC more efficiently, installed 1500 watts heater in side of the wooden bench, will post pictures shortly, interested to hear other owners about ther units upgrades

We have the same camper and love it, ours came standard with many of the options you installed.

Harleyman, I am surprised that yours have many of these options, Ive been looking for a trailer with the same layout with these options but closest I've got was jay flight 28BHBE, however, it was little bit on the heavier side to tow with my truck, settled on SLX, the only factory options available were 15000 btu AC and a spare tire, I did not like the bottom being open, especially the slide out mechanism, let me know what particular options are on your trailer, maybe yours is built for the west cost market, I don't know if Jayco does it but Keystone builds different versions for different markets, thanks

Ours was a bit more in cost at $19,100.00 (including our trailer hitch and break set up, sway bars and such also $300 worth of extras) out the door but we did get an enclosed underbelly, gas struts on the main bed. Our water heater is gas and electric and we do have a wall thermostat. The other goodies you added we do not have. We do have a fan in the bathroom. My biggest issue is it did not come with a Cable input on the outside to hook to the campground cable TV on a rainy day.
We have camped in 30 degree temps and the unit stays worm and uses little gas (We do have the large gas tanks) I have not used it in the hot air yet to see if the air conditioner is adequate.
We did also get the hid-a-bed instead of the Jaybed by the TV. We wanted the 28BHBE but the dealer had to order it so we took this one as it was on the lot.

Why did you install a 1500 watt heater in the bench? To save gas in the furnace?

My trailer has an outside cable connection right above the hot water heater, the bench heater is to save on gas while camped at a park with electrical connection , you pay for it why not to have them to pay for heat, could you post some picture of you trailer? Is your underbelly heated as well?

No I do not have a heated underbelly or ducts for heat in the floor. AC Is ducted in the ceiling. I can get some picks up but it is tucked away in the barn for the winter

Thanks for pictures, looks like your Ac is not controled by a wall thermostat, is it? Bc I only have a thermostat for heat located on the entertainment center side wall, would like to combine both AC and heat in one thermostat , this way AC would turn on and off as called by the thermostat instead of continuously running the fan, not that hard to do, the hardest part is to run wires from AC to a thermostat on a wall, make it look good , also today, I swapped the original WFCO 9735p for WFCO 9835, much nicer unit, needed additional DC connections for tank heaters, got three of them , waiting for a triple wall switch to arrive to finish the connection, the 9835 has 11DC connection instead of 9735's 6dc, bought on amazon for $118, very happy

You talk about weight being one of the reasons for your choice, but according to the specs, the BHBE only weighs 170 lbs more empty than your BHSW. I wonder how the "yellow sticker" weights compare? And if all of the items you've added would bring the weight to close to what a similarly configured BHBE would be? The big difference in the two weight wise is the CCC (the BHBE has more than 2x the CCC of the BHSW), and careful loading could mitigate that number. You could just load it as if the CCC was lower and you'd be in good shape.
