2019 Eagle HT 284BHOK

Does anyone have this floor plan? I did a search and absolutely nothing came up. This is a new one for this year and it looks amazing! The modern farm house interior is growing on me - I like it better than the American traditions package.

Again, it blows my mind that this is marketed as HT (half-ton towable). At 35' long and GVWR of 10K no one in their right mind would hitch this beast onto a half-ton, and this isn't even the biggest/heaviest one in their HT line up! This marketing strategy is one area of Jayco that I am NOT happy with. It puts people at risk.

End rant.

Anyways, great floor plan, not much info out there on it, curious as to anyone that's got it or getting it or seen it.

Would love to see one in person. I like the floorplan as well.
But yeah, that's a big trailer.

I hate the HT marketing too. Sure you can tow it with most half tons in the single cab long bed 4x2 with max towing configuration, and nobody else in the cab with you.

Looks great. Your Eagle specs are very similar to my Eagle. I've pulled a lot of trailers besides our two TTs. I just can't imagine pulling mine with anything less than an F250. There are times when I'm really glad I'm pulling with a 350DRW. But then, I'm not selling trailers.

But many will swear that a half ton is adequate.

I just joined the forum. And just got a 284BHOK with the modern farmhouse interior on January 26. I towed it from the dealer in Wabash, IN back home to Salt Lake - about 1,500 miles over the course of 2 days. With a new Ram 1500. No problems, even though the wind did kick up around western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming. I put a set of 1000# bars on my Fastway e2 WDH to get it home, but I'm looking forward to setting up the ProPride 3P hitch I just bought for it. I honestly haven't spent much time in it yet, but my initial impression of the fit and finish is "WOW." I'm upgrading from a Rockwood Roo expandable.

I also have a new Ram 1500 and thinking about the 284BHOK. Now that you’ve had it for awhile, how do you feel about the Ram towing it?

I've towed another 3,000 miles since I last posted here. I've been really happy with how the truck has performed. I think the keys have been the 5.7 liter motor, the towing package with the 3.92 rear end, and the ProPride 3P hitch. Acceleration, braking, and handling have all been flawless. And I never feel like the motor lacks power, even on the long, steep grades we have out west. The technology--mainly the adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring--makes for a relaxing driving experience. The main concern with towing a high-profile trailer like the 284BHOK with a 1/2 ton is, of course, wind. The ProPride hitch completely eliminates sway, and it reduces the effect of "semi suck" to something barely noticeable. The whole rig still gets pushed around in high winds more than a 3/4 ton would, but it's never reached the "white knuckle" point for me.

That’s good to hear. Could you tell me what wheel/tire package you have? I am concerned with the tire load rating on the sticker of only 1,300 or so pounds. This is obviously much lower than the published 1,700 lbs payload rating on the truck. I have the Longhorn with 5.7 and 3.92 gear ratio. I have the 22” wheels and wonder if that is the cause of the lower rating.

Great question, and something I should have addressed in my response to your first question. Mine has 20" wheels. The factory tires were Falken 275/55R20s, which had an "XL" load rating and a maximum psi of 41. I understand Ram's need to put lighter tires on their trucks to help meet MPG requirements, but those tires weren't going to give me much peace of mind towing a 9,000 lb. trailer fully loaded. I switched to a set of Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLTs in the same size but with an "E" load rating and a max psi of 80. My door sticker also shows a max payload of a bit more than 1,300 pounds. I'm not counting on the E-rated tires to boost my payload capacity, but they obviously don't hurt.

I don't think the 22" wheels are the cause of the low max payload on your truck--that number is just a function of the GVWR minus the curb weight of your particular truck. More options (like on a Longhorn or Limited) equals lower payload. I'd recommend that you determine your actual payload: passengers plus cargo plus 600-800 lbs. of tongue weight from the trailer, depending on how you set up your WDH. If you're under the max payload on the door sticker, you should be OK. And if you can find some tires with a D or E load rating, I'd highly recommend getting them (although I'm not sure they're available in the 285/45R22 size).

If you have 600-800lbs of tongue weight and your trailer weighs 9K, you are asking for problems. A 9K trailer should have a tongue weight of 1100lbs give or take.

Remember that the published, advertised tongue weight is for an empty trailer with base options, no battery/batteries, and no propane tanks. Towing this trailer with a half ton Ram with 1300lbs of payload is not a good idea, and in reality, overloaded.

I know you half ton Ram guys won't want to hear this, and will likely just keep on doing it until something happens, and that's fine - as long as you're aware.

I'm here researching Jaycos after recently retiring my Rockwood. New here, but not new to the RV game.

The 284BHOK is 8,135 lbs as a fictional dry weight. So, rolling down the road will be at least 9,300 lbs. Tongue weight should always be in the 10-15% for a conventional tow trailer and the massive front storage probably makes this one a tad tongue heavy. Still, take 12.5% and you'll be right in the 1,150 lb range for your tonge.

Add in at least 50 lbs for the WDH and the trailer + hitch will be dropping 1,200 lbs onto a truck. It absolutely blows my mind that a person above is towing this with a truck that has only a 1,300 lb payload rating. This person is going to be way, way over his Ram's GVWR.

This is a bunkhouse, so I generally assume at least a family of 3, but probably 4. Fully clothed, an average mom and dad will weigh in at 350 lbs and add 150 lbs for two kids. That's 500 lbs of human being. Add in 100 lbs of gear, bags, food, games, electronics, pets, and other stuff you take with you in the vehicle. Add in 100 lbs of tools and other items in the bed or on the truck. Figure 700 lbs of people & gear on the truck.

1,200 + 700 = 1,900 lbs. 1,750 lbs of payload is right on the hairy edge. If you pack light, then you can do it. But, with a trailer of this size, I'd really recommend 2,000 lbs or more of available payload/GVWR. It's a long, big, heavy trailer. I agree with the posts from 2019 that scoff at Jayco for labeling this monster as a half-ton towable trailer.

When I see people make comments like adding heavier tires may not help payload, but they can't hurt it ... it just makes me sad. People just really don't know how GVWR and payload work.

I just ordered a 2021 284BHOK, but won’t get it until the spring (my request so it doesn’t get delivered in the salt and pretty much drive it straight to storage)

I’m pulling it with 2015 F350 6.2 gasser. Plenty of payload but it’s gonna work the motor no doubt.
