2021 F150 towing 224BH

Has anyone used the new 2021 F150 to tow their trailers? We have a 224BH and getting a new F150 to take over the tow. Just wondering everyone’s general opinion.

Hey Sheena, I think with that you will do fine. is it the EcoBoost 6, or the v8? Have heard good things about the EcoBoost motor for towing over the V8 but they both would pull 6000 odd lbs OK.

I have a 2018 1/2 ton dodge with a V8 and it should pull my trailer OK I figure when I get it.

Towing GVWR is 9000lbs on the truck, has a tow package which is good.

I was planing for this when I purchased it 2 years ago, my little tent trailer is finished, so time to move up, Pulled that like it was not even there, but only 2000lbs. My jeep wrangler pulled it like nothing too with a 6 banger in it. Nothing special about it, traded it on the truck.

Cheers, good luck with that. Keep the shiny side up and the rubber on the road!

Depending on what options you have on the F150(Motor, Gear Ratio, etc.), you should likely be fine. I towed our 267BH for a number of years with my 2015 F150. I had the 3.5 Ecoboost and had upgraded to LT Tires, added a sway bar, some helper springs, etc. It was never lacking for power and towed quite nicely at 65mph. We have two younger children and the massive amount of "Stuff" that ends up coming along with us on our trips sent me into a 3/4 ton strictly for the payload. That, for me, was the limiting factor with the 1/2 ton and our trailer.

Edit to add: I cannot say enough good things about the ProPride Hitch. It made/makes towing a breeze.

I rented one of those campers last summer before buying my 264BH and towed it with my 5.0 F150 which was sufficient but was a bit of a dog when towing due to larger and heavier tires combined with 3.31 gears. Ive since upgraded to a 2020 3.5 Ecoboost with the max tow and 3.55 gears which handles the trailer great.

I have a 2020 f150 with the max tow and I tow a 28 ft trailer. The 2020 tows my trailer better then my 2018 . The big difference is the 2020 has 20 inch wheels which comes with a stiffer suspension . My expectation is the 2021 will tow even better then the 2020.

GatorBlue92: We also have the 264BH and used to tow it with an F150 5.4L V8. We recently upgraded to a 2020 F150 3.5L EcoBoost Turbo with HD tow package, and the new truck runs circles around the old V8!

The F150 has a zillion engine/gear ratio options. What do you have for an engine?

Half Ton Ford Towing

I've got a 2012 F150 with the eco-boost and 3.55 gears. I just purchased a 264bh about 250 miles from my house and pulled it all the way home. I had leveling on it but no anti-sway bar yet. Pulled great except for pulling the back end around a bit in the wind. Hope the anti-sway will take care of that. Honestly still wish I had a 3/4 ton for the extra weight but I think as long as I stay off the mountains it will be fine.

We've towed our 28RL Whitehawk across Maryland and down to the Smokies with no issues. 3.5 eco w/3.55. 6400# dry weight with 1600# payload.

Which eco-boost did you get, the 2.7 or the 3.5?

An anti-sway setup will help a lot. Mine stops most of the swaying. I can feel it wiggle a bit back there but it doesn't sway.

3.5. She pulls very well. It’s just the weight of the truck i think. Plus on steep hills the larger brakes, etc, of a 3/4 ton would be nice. I think it will be fine on most roads though.

Things to consider.
Most folks tow perhaps 10% of the time and use their truck as a daily driver the other 90% of the time. A 3/4 ton truck will tow better but do you want to deal with the poor fuel economy and harder parking 90% of the time when a good 1/2 ton would serve?
3/4 ton trucks weigh a lot more than a 1/2 ton. Due to the extra vehicle weight, payload may not be all that much more than a 1/2 ton truck. If the half ton is too small, are you better off with a 1 ton truck?

All good points! Hadn’t really thought about not fitting in my parking garage anymore.

If you get the 3.5 Eco-boost with the heavy duty tow package you'll be fine. That's what my 2011 has, and it's been pulling my Eagle 266RKS (30' and 8,000 lbs. GVW) like a dream! I've read that the newer 3.5's are even better than the old ones.

Enjoy your new combo!

Update with new question

Hey everyone. Great answers. We went with a 2021 FX4 Lariat 3.5L with 2.4kw power generator installed in the box.

Just wondering if anyone has used this generator feature yet and is it reliable?

I have the 2019 F150 3.5 ecoboost shortbox with max payload package. Tows the 224BH with ease. Have a basic weight distribution hitch. The truck carries a family of 5, bikes and kayaks and we are still under the payload on the truck by a good portion.

Never had any oh **** moments when pulling the trailer. Down the main highway able to pass with ease when needed.

Love the 224BH!

I have a 2014 3.5 eco with 3.31 rear end, 4x4 SCREW cab, pulling a Keystone Bullet 248 which is probably similar size and weight as your Jayco. We took it on 1 1600 mile trip including crossing the Continental Divide in Colorado twice. I never had my foot full into the accelerator very far, although I backed speed off pulling steep grades for the sake of the tranny and rear-end. I got poor fuel economy when facing head winds (like 7.5 mpg) but generally about 10.5 mpg. I pulled with the fresh tank about 1/3 full. I have a Fastway F4 round bar WDH that did a great job. I will say that strong side winds were problematic! When crossing a bridge abutment there was temporary sway. Also some sway when semi trailers pass with that side wind. Use the “trailer” switch. My cruise control switched off twice with a sway warning. In all fairness I saw semi trailers swaying also.

I’m considering the 224BH and I wonder how the new Ranger would tow it. It’s well within all the specs. A fully loaded trailer is 5,600 and tow capacity of the Ranger is 7,500. The payload capacity is almost 1,600 pounds which I think would easily handle the tongue weight and a few passengers. Has anyone tried this? Andy

It's interesting that you asked this question. Just yesterday we were talking to a couple towing a similar sized travel trailer with a new Ranger. They said it tows OK, but were complaining about the towing range. According to them, they were getting less than 150 towing miles with their Ranger's small fuel tank (18 gal?) capacity.
