Found it!
After a particularly frustrating day I was about to throw in the towel when I had a thought. I had removed and tested the switch several times but I hadn’t yet pulled the entire switch panel. I did that and, after several minutes of checking connections, found a weirdly colored twist connector. What I thought was a weird color was the connector had actually melted. Removed the connector, cleaned and re-twisted the two wires, installed new nut and we were back in business. Works like a champ.
Thanks to all for your advice and patience with a wannabe electrician. Appreciate you guys.
I’m currently on my phone and unable to provide pics but will do so when I’m at a computer

Rgraff,
Great to hear problem resolved, and that it was a clean fix

I had a strong suspicion your problem was at the switch or the motor. Glad you got it resolved!

congrats
Good to see you found it! So any ideas if it was it a one time thing or what caused it? Maybe just high resistance in the loose connection you found, hope so.

I wouldn't have thought of the switch, particularly after you measured some current down at the motor. Presumably not quite enough resistance to totally open the connection, but enough to pull the voltage down to almost nothing. One suggestion I refrained from making because it could be difficult was to run wire directly from the battery to the motor. That would have ruled out the motor. At that point I would have suspected a loose connection, but never thought of a fried connector. Good to add to the knowledge base here.

This is the nut in question. How this didn't kick a breaker or blow a fuse is a head scratcher.

Open panel view. The loose connection, post repair, are the yellow and red wires.
Like I said earlier, cleaned up wire ends, re-twisted and replaced the bad (melted) wire nut. Back in business.

panel wiring
thanks for sharing the pic. I want to rearrange some of the switches in my panel and now I know I need to be ready for some chaos in there. My awning switch is on the right side, the slide on the left, makes no sense. Interior and exterior lights are backwards as well. Also most are not labeled so even if you learn them all you can't expect someone else to understand what is what.

Anybody know what year they switched from wire nuts to WAGOs? That's what all my connectors are, and I'm not unhappy about it.

That may be as narrow a time as we can get, since it is likely it was a mid-year change and may not have happened all at once.
