264BHW water heater bypass

Water heater is at the rear right in a cargo compartment in a plywood box. There are two tubes at the rear center under a "low point drain" label but I see no valves. There is a lower bunk over the cargo compartment. Do I need to remove the bed to get to the water heater? Apparently bypass valves can be just about anywhere according to the model. Getting ready to winterize.

What year is yours? On my 18, the bypass and low point drain valves are behind the water heater. The cargo door is too short for me to access from the outside. I must go inside, and lift the lower bunk that is hinged lengthwise to access that area. My water heater is not seperated from that storage area by a wall or panel.

2017 model year. I can't get through the cargo door, either. I will take the mattress out and see what I can see. Thanks

Does your lower bunk have hinges that allow lifting half of the bed to access storage without removing the mattress? If so, that's the easy way to get to the back of the water heater. I installed hinge stays on each end of the lid so it stays up at a 90 degree angle during access.

Has hinges. Found the valves. Drains are petcocks. Not sure is parallel or perpendicular is correct, tried both. Nothing drains, I assume it left through the drains on the left midway. Hopefully heater tank is empty. Nothing left but installing antifreeze. Thanks for the help.

The low point drain valves move in and out, pull out to open, push in to close. The bypass valves twist 90 *.

You're very welcome. If you install hinge stays on each end of the opening, you can lift the cargo area lid up 90 degrees so it stays straight up and there's no need to remove the mattress. Makes it easy to access that area for storage or for maintenance.

BTW - if you ever get caught with a possible freeze and didn't have time to winterize you can leave the propane on and the water heater will fire up momentarily when below a certain temp to prevent freezing.

You need to access the front of the water heater through the outside panel. Remove all sources of pressure, that is, turn off the pump and detatch city water hose then open a tap to release any pressure from the system.

Open the pressure release valve at the top of the water heater first. If you do this while the tank is pressurized, you'll get squirted or burned, hence the hint to open the tap first. If you don't open the valve, it will take much longer to drain. Next, unscrew the plug at the bottom of the heater. If there is an anode attached to the plug, replace it if it is badly eaten. Replace the plug when you are done so critters don't make a home in the tank.
The water heater will not drain through low point valves; only through the drain plug. If you leave the water heater full and it freezes, it will be destroyed.
A little water at the bottom won't hurt anything. While you are at this end of season task, it's a good time to flush out debris and mineral build-up, especially if the water is hard in your area. Look for a water heater flush wand at Walmart, Amazon, etc. They are cheap and work well.

I've never tried, but it's in a box under the bunk in my unit, so it must come out the exterior. Lots of really smart, experienced people here, I'm sure someone can help. Welcome to the forum.
