28BHBE window shopping

The DW and I are headed to the dealer to look at a left over 2018 28BHBE this weekend. I'm going to see what they will offer for my 26BH and hope they will deal since I bought it from them. Like dealing with a car dealer, I hate negotiating and know they are going to try to low ball my trade. The elite packaged 28BHBE is listed at $23k and they are offering a $2k off Veteran's Day special so I thought I'd see what they will do.

Anyway, for those with a 28BHBE or similar sized TT, what WDH do you have? Looks like I'll need a 1,200-1,400 lb TW hitch. The 1,200 and 1,400 lb Equilizer hitches run about $600 while the Fastway E2 1,200 runs $335. I've had an E2 pulling the 26BH for the past 5 years with very little issues. Fastway even replaced my trunion head when a locking pawl broke off.

I have the same trailer, just a 2017. I have had great success with the Reese Dual Cam hitch with active sway control. 1200lbs bars.

We did the same thing. Moved up from the 2013 26BH to a 2017 28BHBE. We love the new trailer. I use the 1,400 lb Equal--I-zer Sway control hitch. So far I have no issues with trailer hitch combination. Have you searched RV parts stores on line, like etrailer and tweety etc.; you might be able to find it cheaper. Doesn't hurt to look

I used to run a Blue Ox on my BHBE, LOVED it. I still have it in my garage, only used it a dozen times or so before we traded up to MH land. IIRC, you're through this area every now and again. I'd make a deal on it for you, but I can't ship it, sorry.

ETA: It's the 1400/14000

I use a Blue Ox Sway Pro as well on my 2016 28BHBE. No issues and very easy to use and install.

I don’t know MSRP, but you should be landing about .75 of whatever that is. Never pay more than .8 for any trailer, but an end of model year unit should be closer to 25% off.

Use 1200 Equalizer. My tongue weight is in low 1000 range. This is with full propane, food, drinks, spare tire and underbelly mount, bike rack and 2 bikes but empty water tanks. Also I enclosed the area under the front bed.

Check the aluminum frame for the shower. The bottom 2 corners were not properly sealed on ours. Shower leaked all over the floor. Solved the problem with a lot of silcone in the corners.

The TT at the dealer has the 15k A/C, "zopt" (what ever that is) and the elite package. According to Jayco's website, the MSRP with those options for a 2018 is $31,927.

Our 2017 comes in at 1200 TW with full fresh water. I use a 1400/14000 ProPride hitch since I already had it from our previous 26BH/Tundra combo. Tows like a dream with not even a hint of sway or even a wiggle even when in the wash of a semi at 65-70 mph.

Same with ours...leaked like crazy until I added some clear silicone in the corners. I still need to add more as I get a few drops running down the side when I rinse off the glass doors.

I towned it with an equilizer hitch. I also towed with a proride. In my opinion the proride was better for me.

When we bought our 28BHBE I think it was back in 2014 or 15 I think we paid about $20,900 with the elite package. There is lots of mark up in those thinks.

Good luck

I have the same camper but a 2017. Like others have already mentioned I have the Blue Ox SwayPro WDH and it works great. Remember this camper is an underslung coupler and do you will need a WDH setup made for an underslung coupler.

Thank you all for the replies. Would the tongue weight on this TT be too much to haul it 20 miles or so without a WDH? There is no way I’d try this with my old 1500 Silverado but my F250 is a pretty stout truck. I’m not going to buy a WDH from the dealer any pay their mark-up and premium for a questionable installation. When the same dealer installed my E2 hitch, they used a 2” riser ball on a drop shank. I didn’t think anything about it until guy at a trailer shop said that setup was “dumb”.

No. I did not use the WDH all the time. It’s good and safe but not a necessity for everyone all the time.

I’ve driven mine across town with my 2500 a couple times. Generally if I’m not reaching highway speeds I won’t put the bars on

We went to the dealer today and looked at the unit. The DW and kids absolutely loved it. I didn't like the small rear storage on the drivers' side or the space between the master bed and TV wall but overall it's a great floor plan and that slide makes a huge difference.

The dealer had us fill out a sheet describing the condition of our 26BH and (unseen) offered us $6700 for it which was a but lower than we wanted. The MSRP they provided is $31,376. The "Veteran's Day sale" price for me was $22,350, so roughly 29% off MSRP. They gave us a rough monthly payment based on 6.5% APR and a quick look at USAA's RV rate was at 5.5%. We walked away to ponder the purchase for a few days. Decisions, decisions...

The markup on new units is nuts.
Take the MSRP and knock off 30% and that's what you should get it for tax, title, and tag, hooked to your truck and down the road.
At 29%, I'd think that's not too bad, as long as that's the down the road price. Even at that, my wife would have them throwing in a freebie or two.

As far as the trade in price.... every trailer is different. My idea of a clean trade, your idea and the next guy's idea are all gonna be different. And the sales guy is gonna have a different opinion on all that too. Understand, there has to be some meat on the bone for him to get on your trade. IMO, if a dealer has a couple hundred into a unit and makes $500-$1000, I'd think that's fair.

We are on our 3rd motor home. I traded in twice. They will always rob you on your trade in!, but it saves you the headache of a private sale.I would concentrate on the purchase. The rule of thumb we always use is to take 30-35% off MSRP. It’s always worked for us and we have always been close to those numbers. Also make sure you pull up other rigs for sale on other dealers websites and share them with your dealer,(if they are lower prices). And I would travel if and when we ever buy again just to get a fair price! And PLEASE “DON’T” buy any warranties, protective sprays etc.. it’s all BS! The only thing extra we ever buy is GAP ins., and tire/wheel protection, (we always get flats)!

And finally inspect, inspect, inspect your new rig when you pick it up! Our last rig had numerous issues at delivery! Don’t take delivery or make them put it all in writing before you do.

Good luck,

John
