If your camper is wired 30 amp, you will need a dog bone to adapt the cord to the 50 amp receptacle .

If you are wired 50 amp, you will need another dog bone for plugging into a 30 amp cord.

What model is your camper, that would help.

Everything will work fine but you will only have 25 amps of supply. If you draw more than 25 amps you may trip the pedestal breaker. Your RV will not be in any danger under this condition.

No worries as @#2 says especially if your RV is 30amp and you plug into a 50 amp pedestal using one of those adapters that looks like and is called a dog bone If your RV is 50 amp plugged into a 30 amp you're more than likely to trip that breaker if you glamp as usual and be in danger of getting pissed off Btw, make sure you have the proper dog bone or you won't get a bark

Just use a "dog bone" adapter not one of those short tiny adapters. The short ones will overheat and could damage the RV or pedestal plugs.
Do not use the adapter style like this one

I recommend using a 50Amp plug. the majority of the units use a 30 amp, which means the 30 amp plug is wore out and can cause arching. I use 50 any chance I can

If you are talking about converting your 50 Amp cord to a 30 Amp plug using a dog bone there is little danger other than tripping the breaker. You are going from 100 Amps (50 per leg) of total power to 30 Amps so you have to be very careful not to use multiple large items at the same time. Going the other way and trying to plug a 30 Amp cord into a 50 Amp plug is dangerous and a potential fire hazard. The breaker should always be the lowest rated part of any circuit so it trips before anything else is damaged and in that scenario your 30 Amp cord would melt before the 50 Amp breaker tripped.

I didn't think they made that style of adapter or how it got approved? The dog bone is HD...the same gauge as your RV plug. I wouldn't trust that one from Walmart...thanks for the warning @4.

I've plugged into a 50 amp service using a dog bone into my 30 amp other RV many times. From what I understood the RV's electrical panel will only draw in 30 amps maximum, any more would trip the breaker in the RV so no worries. Mind you, I did notice the hair dryer had a little more pep So what @ 5 said makes perfect sense then...using the 50 amp service with a dog bone to avoid a loose/arching connection at the 30 amp service.

You just need something like this. I carry one, I've only have used it a few times. You still only have a 30 amp service.

X2, I’ve used this dog bone for 10 years now and my hookup’s have always worked. The 30 AMP side on the pedestal is sometimes well worn

A 50 Amp service has two legs of 50 Amps not two legs of 25 Amps.

I think he meant you'd still only get 25 (30) amp service using a 30 amp cord with a 50 to 30 dog bone.

20A and 30A outlets are wired the same, that is they are both single phase 120vac with line, neutral and ground. 50A outlets are 120/240vac, still single phase. Never mind why. So there are two hot lines that are each 120vac with respect to neutral and 240vac with respect to each other.
20a and 30a to 50a adapters connect to one of the 120vac legs of the 50a service plus neutral and ground with no connection to the second 120vac leg. So, connecting a 30a trailer to a 50a service, using an adapter will work fine. The input breaker in the trailer protects your system wiring from the higher power rating of the 50a service. Your trailer won't know the difference.

I use the 30A to 50A dog bone adapter routinely, even at home where I have 50A RV service on the side of my garage. But instead of relying on the main breaker in my camper to protect the rig by itself, I go through a Hughes Watchdog. It will cut us off right at 30A, before the main breaker has a chance to get thrown, and it's pretty picky about it too. So I can verify 100% that using the adapter, I get all 30A.
I will +1 using a dog bone instead of a puck. It gives the heat a better chance to dissipate so stuff doesn't melt. Plus it's physically better at keeping secure connections. Which is important since loose connections cause additional resistance, which causes additional heat, which causes things to melt and burn. BTDT.

The 50amp pedestal breaker will not protect your 30 amp system. You will be relying on your 30 amp main breaker only. Just be aware of that.

billcf7, I see that on Amazon. Great to know that if I ever get a 50a to 30a dogbone. I currently have only a 50/30 plug/receptacle. I don't think it has any protection.

Always good to have double the safety especially when dealing with electricity. I like the fact that if the RV 30 amp breaker fails somehow, it won't matter or go on fire with this type dogbone Thanks for posting that @17, never seen that one before.
