A/C stops cooling at night

Hello all. New to this lifestyle. I have a 2022 Jayco Jayflight SLX8 324BDS. A/c is good during the day, damper can be set anywhere and it’s on high at 72 degrees. When it comes to nighttime we leave it just like that but at sometime during the night it stops blowing. The first night we had it on 69 degrees and low fan. Remedy was to shut it off for an hour and go drive around for some groceries. Came back, turned it on and no issues. Assuming it was frozen up. Last night I had it at 72, high setting and around 3am it was no longer blowing. I shut it off, set an alarm for 2 hours and kicked it back on. Been good ever since. I will say I closed the damper in the main space to push more air to the front and rear rooms. We have the standard Jayco issue Dometic thermostat with a mode/power button on the left and up/down arrows on the right. It controls both heat and cool. We only have one a/c at the moment (will be getting a second after this month is over). It’s a 15,000 btu unit. Open to any and all ideas, criticism, critique, etc. As I’m lost on why it keeps doing what it’s doing. I’ll say we are in Virginia Beach area where temps are high 80’s if not low 90’s and fairly high humidity. Thanks again!

I have read it is recommended to run the fan on high to help keep the coils from freezing up.

Thank you. I had it on high last night set at 72 and at 3am it just stopped blowing. Once I shut it down for a bit and turned it back on it’s been fine ever since

If you encounter this again, I would be sure to keep all the vents open in order to obtain a little more air flow. ~CA

Got it. You think perhaps because I had the main damper closed air flow stopped and it just shut itself off again?

The dew pt. map for Va. Bch shows it occurring at an ambient temp in the low 70's. Could be the dew is collecting on the coils and freezing. Noticed too, the humidity there is right at 65%, which is considered high. It's a new unit so it's not likely it's low on freon which is usually the reason residential units freeze up. Otherwise, love that area, I like to sit on the bch. and track the ships coming and going from Newport News and Norfolk on a phone app., Occasionally you'll catch a carrier leaving Norfolk, they're fun to watch.

I think that it is a distinct possibility as I have encountered that as well and didn't have problems with all of the vents open.

Another possibility is that many (maybe most) RV A/C's have a freeze sensor on the coils that is supposed to turn off the compressor when freezing is detected. There have been reports in the past where the sensor failed or fell off. It is located on the cold coils (evaporator), but you may want to verify the exact unit you have and see if you can find specific details into if you have one and if so where it is.

One other thought to share, you can clear the frozen coils faster if you leave the fan "on" and the a/c off (or at a higher setpoint temperature) which will thaw out the A/C much more quickly. ~CA

If thermostat is set to AUTO it will kick on and off as it reaches set temp. You can also set thermostat to continuously run fan when compressor turns off at set temp

Thank you very much for the info! I keep thinking I just need to keep track of what works and what doesn’t. Also, been in the Navy over 20 years, most of which spent in Virginia Beach. Had a short time on some ships and wife was on a carrier. Certainly a site to see!

Never thought about that. One of my neighbors here at the campground mentioned climbing up on the roof and taking a look as well. Also, thanks for the tips on bumping the temp up.

Thanks all. I ran it on auto, dampers halfway on 73 and it never shut off. Appreciate all the feedback as I figure things out!
