AC - Breakers
Hi everyone,
My 2018 Jayco Greyhawk 31FS does not appear to be cooling properly. The thermostat was just replaced which I had expected to resolve the issue but apparently it has not.
I tried to turn the 2 breakers for the AC off and then back on while the unit was running but the strange thing is that the unit did not stop running when the breakers were turned off and there was no noticeable change in power consumption or operation as the breakers were turned back on. I’m wondering if I’m missing something obvious here...
I’m plugged into 30amp power in case that makes a difference.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Only obvious thing is the breakers must be marked wrong. When you say not cooling properly what do you mean? The air temp coming out of the vents should be 15-20 degrees cooler than the ambient air temperature in the coach.

What is the reason you are turning breakers on and off for? The unit either is getting supplied electricity or its not. Breakers aren't potentiometers they are switches.

When we awoke this morning the temperature inside was 74 and we had AC on. It is now 84. All of our vents and doors are closed and we are parked in the shade. I’m new to RV’ing but thinking it should be cooler than 84.

We were trying to ensure that the breaker wasn’t thrown notwithstanding any it seems to be On.

Was it cooling yesterday? Fan on high or low? If you have the fan on low the coil may be freezing up.

Thank you for your help with this - I really appreciate it.
It wasn’t cooling yesterday but we were also travelling unlike today. We’ve had the fan on high since last night. The temperature is now 90 so it’s continued to get warmer.

You may have a AC unit that went bad. I am in a different brand trailer, Crossroads, former Jayco owner. My AC quit Wednesday, had a RV service guy come out and verify. The compressor will kick on and no cold air would come out. He did an amp test to verify, if the unit has freon the amperage should read at least 10amps on the meter, mine was 7amp. Basically that means there is no resistance on the compressor or no fluid to compress. He also checked incoming and out going air temps. 87 and 89 degrees.
My unit is 14 months old and made by AirExcell Coleman Mach 15000btu.
My dealer RVONE, said they can't even get units in to replace it. The independent RV guy deals directly with the AC manufacturer, and will have one to replace it hopefully less than a week. All under manufacturers warranty. Only cost to me is him to come to the campground.

Question, when was the last time you cleaned the filter? I clean mine about every 7 days of use.

Thanks for the feedback. I will get it tested this coming week if I can’t resolve the issue by done other means before then. We are the 2nd owner on this 2018 and the previous owner apparently had the AC unit and controller replaced last year. All this to say the RV seems to have a bit of a history.

If you have a hand-held thermometer try measuring the input and output air temperatures. At best you should see a 20 degree drop from input to output. So if you have 80 degrees going into the unit (not outside temp but rather inside at the filter area) you hopefully will get 60 degrees out.
This is a good reason to start the cooling process early. If it is 75 inside the rig the output air may be 55 which makes things cooler as long as it can keep up. It is easier to maintain a temp rather than bring one down.
If the input/output temps are the same, the air conditioner isn't cooling at all.

I need clarification. You said you turned of the Breakers. as in two breakers. If there is only one A/C then there is only one breaker. If you did turn off the A/C breaker it most certainly would have stopped. Go back to the beginning and find the one breaker that turns off the A/c and get back to us. Baby steps.

This seems to be the case - the temperature is the same.
FYI, we got the temp down to 74 yesterday morning by opening the doors and windows and then we sealed them all and started trying to cool. In general good practice as you mention but given the output is the same as the input then I guess this is a mute point.

OK, I found the right breaker (they are all mislabeled) and turned it off and then back on. There was no noticeable change when the unit powered up again.
