Adding a second battery

Good afternoon. I have a 2017 Jayco Hummingbird17RK. I would like to add one more deep cycle battery. Has anyone done this and if so, how did you mount the second battery?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I install another battery in ours, I don’t know why in my unit didn’t come with two but hey it is what it is, you should have space for to install another battery just make sure you put positive to positive and negative to negative.

I do not see enough room for the second battery. Do you have a picture of your setup?

I have a much smaller trailer than you do. Mine is 20 feet from end to end of tongue.

It’s best to have two of the same batteries and about the same age. If you add them together remember your system will only charge both up to the weakest battery level. Since the old battery is 2+ years old and only has a life span of 3-5 years, once a year you should separate them and have them tested, or charge them up separately and make sure they at least have the same voltage at full charge.

My current battery is new. I purchased a used trailer and had solar added and a new deep cycle battery installed. My problem is to determine where to place the battery. I do not have room with the current rack.

Is your battery tray on the tongue?
Can you mount a larger tray?

If not is there a storage area in the front inside of the trailer?could put one in there with extended cables.

Yes, the current battery is mounted just behing the propane tank. I think I would have to move the brackets a little to the back (toward the trailer) to provide enough room for a second battery. Of course, the propane regulator is close and may not provide enough room. I have considered using the inside storage area. The only thing is that is the only outside storage I have.

Thanks for your thoughts. I was hoping that I would hear from another Hummingbird owner who had already added a battery.

What about something like this?

You could bolt it to the tongue, and since it's metal it should be strong enough to take the weight. Check out the "installed" pictures.

I just added a second battery box to my 174BH. Had to unbolt the original and slide it over to the side, then mount the two battery boxes side by side. I did have to cut the handle off one of the boxes so they would both fit.

Here is the battery box I added.
