air blow out question

Do I have to by-pass the water heater to blow out the lines with air, or can I just drain it and put the plug back in?

It's not necessary to bypass the water heater. Your rig could be different but I can drain my water heater with a low point drain. I have to open the relief valve on the water heater to get it to drain.

If you drain the heater then replace the plug, and then purge with air, you will likely push water back into heater requiring another draining of the heater. But that does tend to push water out of the inlet and outlet fittings of the heater. I recommend doing that, then draining the heater leaving the plug out. Then finally bypass the water heater and blow the rest of the plumbing out thoroughly.

I put my Atwood's plastic plug very loosely back into the heater, enough to keep any bugs from entering but any water will still leak out. Then in spring I remove it again and flush the heater.

When I blow out my lines, I open all the bypass valves, to ensure no water is trapped behind a valve. With some of the new TT’s with the three way valves you may have to turn the valve 45 degrees or flip it back and forth to ensure the water can escape. I start with the water heater drain closed, pressurize the system (<40 psi), and then go through and open the various faucets, and low point drains. I have replaced my water heater drain plug with a valve, so while the system is still pressurized, I will open the drain valve and force the little bit of water out of the tank.

I also use antifreeze, to ensure there is no low spot that might accumulate any remaining water, so I will bypass off the water heater and fill the system with antifreeze, then blow out the antifreeze. It does take a few extra minutes but I am confident that there is no risk of broken fittings in the spring.

do you have a picture you can send of the valve you put on water heater, where the plug used to go. it is sooooooo awkward to reach and turn my plug, I would love to know how to make that easier.
