Any Mavic Pilots??

Just got a new DJI Mavic Air 2S and was considering paying for a Premium Membership on Mavic Pilots.

Any members on here as well that can offer advice??

I have had a Mavic Air for years and not paid for Premium membership. I am not sure you need it. Spend some time flying, and using the site and then see.

I have been flying RC, including drones for the last 25 years. Other than an AMA membership, which will save you some headaches with insurance I have no other memberships.

Do register with the FAA. If you don't you are in violation. Properly label your drone, fly within regs and be aware that it will soon become law that your drone must be sending coded data when in flight. That identifies you and the drone.

I don't fly a drone, but my BIL does. He's always checking for no-fly zones before he lifts off. They do change from time to time, according to his tablet screen.

Yea. Been watching alot of vids and reading articles on the do's and don'ts.

Yea already Registered with FAA and was considering acquiring my Part 107, just to have..

This drone has alot of nice features.. Way more than my older drone..

My wife and I have been flying RC airplanes since 1972. Now the FAA has classified all flying models as Drones and require a license to legally fly. They just came out with a written test that you must pass and carry a copy of your test certificate along with your FAA license to be legal. The AMA has a lot of information on the requirements issued by the FAA, or go to the FAA’s website and look for the “Drone Zone”. The test required is called the “TRUST” test.

Big government has turned a fun hobby into a PITA….

Been flying Rc since I was 14....now 51.... alot has changed over the years...
And Jets...are more strict than the average Rc Plane....while as drones can be bought by anyone and have the potential to do just as much harm thas why the FAA needed to step in.... there are people that have abused the hobby for self gratification.... taking a drone as high into the air to see the curvature of the earth is not safe.....

I learned to fly in a real Cherokee another lifetime ago, circa 1971, lol. And I retired from flying a big jet in 2018. In between I flew RC planes for a while, never got very proficient at it, then Helicopters, and they were a different breed altogether, and now have a Mavic Zoom that is just enough these days. The RC jets are a wonder to behold, truly amazing.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (www.aopa.org) is a great resource for SUAS (AKA drone) pilots.

The RC jets are truly a wonder to behold. As for "real" jets that I've flown, the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was my favorite. If I only was a billionaire...

A Douglas A-4 RC jet is more in my price range.

We took a 10 year break from RC Flying and both of us took flying lessons and learned to fly in a Cessna 152. Then we traded for a Cessna 177 Cardinal. Our RV with wings!

Awesome thread. I picked up a Mavic Pro 2 last year. It was fun. I need to use or sell it. It had an issue and DJI replaced it, but only did a test run with that. Hasn’t moved since September last year. I just cycle the batteries now and then.

Never had a desire to own a real plane till I talked to a guy in a Pitts a couple weeks back. That looks like fun but beyond my pay grade.

I gave a lot of flight instruction in my young days on 152/172's. Fixed gear 177, don't see many these days.

I have an older DJI Advanced that I still use when I fly my paramotor. It's good for roof inspections too! Memberships for sketchy.

The Pitts is a nice airplane for beginner/intermediate aerobatics. The seat(s) aren't the most comfortable (mild understatement LOL).
If you shop and are patient, one can be picked up for less than the price of a new pickup truck.

I have a commercial drone cert. I’m about at the 2 year mark since last biannual. Has that process changed? I used to just go online and watch the videos/answer questions to get current since I do recurrent training at work for my regular certificate.

Check with the FAA. There are recent changes to the rules and regulations.

I have a Phantom 3, Mavic PRO and on my 2nd Spark, the 1st one went for a swim in the creek behind our campsite, and it was just getting dark, so had to wait till morning for search n rescue.... found it, but too late. Purchased another before they were all gone.... great little drone to fly around the camp site. Most people just think it’s a toy.

Good response. I fly a Mooney aircraft. A "complex" airplane. Drones are a wonderful new "flying machine". However, a drone in the wrong place at the wrong time is hazard.

Good point. Where I live there’s some goofball GA pilots skirting under the class B airspace and some are under 400’(the goofballs) where a drone can play. If I recall from days flying small GA stuff they shouldn’t be less than 500’ over populated areas. May have that wrong. Been a while. Anyway, really have to keep an ear out for them. I think any full size plane will win against a drone, but at the very least it’ll sure scare the crap out of someone if they hit it and probably cause some expensive repairs.
