I know a lot of readers of this posting won't believe me, but I simply... "Use the Force, Luke". I live in a cul-de-sac so I can never be lined up with the trailer to hookup (just look at my avatar to the above left of this post). Actually, I've gotten quite good at it over the years. About the only thing I do to help me hitch (besides using my wife to help direct me) is when I'm real close (like inches) to the hitch being over the ball I sometimes open my door so I can look down to see how far I'm moving relative to the ground.

I permanently mounted a hitch mirror to my electric jack made from a muffler hose clamp, tubes from an old fender mount mirror, a few bolts and screws, and a convex mirror purchased at Pep Boys. I installed it years ago and it's still going strong. Always there when I need it. No set up. And best of all, total cost less than $20.

I bought the iball back up camera. Portable magnetic if I recall it is about $130 and it works very well. Most of the complaints about this camera are from people that have blue tooth phones. It operates on the same frequency and blue tooth phones will cause interference to the iball camera. Since I hook alone I wanted something to make it easy. Works for me.

I was just looking at the iball camera online this morning. I help my husband to back up, but I'm pretty sure I do a lousy job as he's constantly hopping out to check it for himself. This might make his life easier (and get me off the hook).

I bought the magnetic hitching aid from Harbor Freight and didn't like them very much. They didn't stand parallel so I couldn't really judge if I was on target. At the Houston outdoor show I found the Hitchin' Rods. They were a bit $$ but worked very well, then I bought a 5th.

Asking my wife to help me will only lead to divorce. So I do it by myself while my wife walks the dog...

I bought the peak camera. Every time I pushed on the gas pedal the picture would go fuzzy could not make out the picture at all. I ended up returning it.

I'm pretty good at doing it myself, I've gotten the GOAL (get out and look) down to about 4 iterations before I'm lined up! LOL!

DW is actually great at helping me line up, but then we've been doing it for a lot of years, the yelling and arguing stopped LONG ago...

DW and I tried hand signals....that wasn't so good. What does wave mean anyway??
Then we tried 2-way radios. Hmmm.....you mean you have to push the little button before you talk????
Now we use the 2 yellow tennis balls on top of 2 magnetic base metal extenders.......that seems to work the best and we eliminated a lot of hard feelings too. Lol

My backup camera mounted in the tail gate of my truck works wonders for me...

With the view screen feet markers and centerline I can watch the trailer hitch ball move right under the trailer hitch first time everytime (Day or Night)..

GOOGLE Images similar to my rear camera view

It's all about training. The first time we ever lined up my dad's boat (we borrowed it for the weekend when we were dating) I trained her which hand signals to use, where I needed to be, etc. We walked around, talked and looked for a good 15 minutes or so that first time. I made my expectations clear, as did she. I told her if she needed to step away where I couldn't see her, that's fine, she just needed to know I would stop until I could see her again. I've only had to honk at her once, I think she forgot this simple rule... If all else fails, she knows to yell "STOP" at the top of her lungs and I'll be on the brakes in a real hurry.

The 2-way radios worked for a while, but she couldn't figure out that she needed to wait a beat after depressing the transmit button or I couldn't hear the first 3 words out of her yammering mouth. So we haven't used them in a while, but they're still in the truck just in case we need them.

To be fair, her parents gave her a big head start with all of this, she grew up (just as I did) on boats all over Texas lakes, so she already had it down pretty good. She just walks away if I start yelling, so like I said, I haven't done that in a while.
