Atwood Water Heater - yellow pilot flame

I have a 2013 Jayco Swift RB185 travel trailer with a small Atwood water heater. The pilot light has a large yellow flame. The unit works fine, but I know something is not quite right. Any idea how much it should cost for me to bring it in to a Jayco dealer to fix? I don't want to get taken advantage of. Thanks.

It depends on their hourly labor rate, and if the shop charges by flat rate or hourly.

However...Before you take it in try adjusting the air mixture valve on the burner tube. It sounds like it might need more air. All you need is a screwdriver and a little time. Look at the air gap to see if it's about 1/4". Smaller than that, try opening it just a little. Larger, close it some. Turn off the water heater first, adjust it, then turn it on to see if it's better or not. If there's no difference, take that burner tube off and look for any bit of debris/spider web inside. That will cause grief too.

If it is just the pilot flame that is yellow you might try removing the pilot jet (orifice) and seeing if it is blocked at all. Proper air/fuel ratio controls what the flame looks like. You could also just replace the part which is not difficult to do.

Here is a link to the service manual which you can download. It may answer your questions.

Good luck!
