If you occasionally (every couple of days) check the auto regulator you will not find yourself out of propane.

Thanks

The indicator under the window will tell you when the primary is empty. Flip the switch to make the spare the primary and refill the empty.

Leaving one tank or two open doesn't really make a difference, does it? 30 lbs of propane fireball isn't much different than 60. Brown pants all around!
Both my bottles verified full, but auto-changeover indicates one empty. Thoughts? Cause?

Defective auto-changeover regulator.
It is one unit. Camco and Marshall are the only 2 I have seen most common.

Verified full by weight? Are both tank valves open?

Thanks for the replies, y'all. Had both tanks filled at the propane filler place (guess they go by weight). Opened the 1st tank, nothing happened on the indicator...thought that was strange. So, I closed that tank and opened the other. Indicator turned green. Reversed the process and it turned red again. Then, with both bottles open, it was green as expected. I will test tonight to see if any propane is getting out of the 'red' tank. Seems like that would verify a bad indicator (?).

When mine went bad after 5 years it would switchover but the indicator light did not indicate properly on one side. Sounds similar.

Just ordered a new Marshal unit. Figured it would be good to have a spare, even if the current one turns out to be ok. Ya just never know,

UPDATE: Propane changeover appears to be working now [of course it is...I ordered the replacement unit yesterday!]. Guess it just needed some exercise. Gonna call this one fixed for now.

Which tank was the primary tank at the time (which way was the selector pointing). If you opened the secondary and the primary tank was closed, the indicator would stay red - tells you there is no pressure in the primary and you are on the secondary. It shows the status of the currently "selected" tank so that you know when the first tank is empty.

YUP. Mine failed while boondocking and cost me at least a partial tank (maybe a full tank) of propane and ~150mi round-trip. Plus, I had to buy them from an RV dealer for 'a bit' more than they should have. But, hey, what you gonna do when they have the part you need and you need to get the hoses, and the filled propane tank, back to your trailer before dark.

Yep, that one came with the new pigtails. I was smelling propane so I changed it out instead of trouble shooting the leak and no more propane smell

I kept smelling a whiff of propane every time I opened the lpg hatch. Bubble tested and replaced the pigtail.. I had to drive 20 miles and pay $20 bucks for one in a pinch. Likely lost most of 1 full tank.
No more leaks.

this has confused me a few times before, but now I pay more attention it seems simple.
Yep, the little lever on the auto-changeover regulator has to be pointed to the full "primary" tank to get a green indicator.

Get a regulator that you can see the indicator easily. The tank cover may have to be removed to see it. There are regulators that have the indicator on top so you can see it much easier.

Yup.. I do the same. I have the automatic regulator but I only open one tank at a time. I don't want to get caught with no propane. When the tank I'm using runs out, I switch over to the full tank and get the empty one filled.

BTW.. I keep a new spare regulator and two new pigtails handy in case of a leak. It happened once already.

I just put one on my camper, I open the tanks before and close after each trip that is when I look. I have had the one go dry, simple, remove and refill before next trip. Beats the middle of the night change over. I know this has been said, but that to me is the way to go.

I'm with you. I just don't get why anyone would turn on only one tank and run it dry before opening the valve on your other tank (most likely at 3 AM in the rain) when your auto switching regulator will take care of it for you. My valves are both open, and I check the regulator for a red flag every couple of days. It lets me know I need to fill a tank, and I never have to run dry at 3 AM!
