Awning again

Hello, So I know I asked about pulling your awning in and when do you do it. I wanted to know if anyone knows what wind speed these new electric awnings could be left out in, with out haveing a problem. I have done some research online, and did not come up with anything. I looked in the owners manual and I dont see anything about wind speed. Anyone know, I really dont wanna pull the thing in every night. But I dont think I would get sleep worrying about it, if I didnt.

Depends on direction and protection. I usually say over 15 MPH and it is direction dependent. Mine comes in every night in an open area with no protection as I have been woken up by it flapping. In the electrics case it could be too late if a freak storm comes through and I have seen them get slapped over someones roof before.

The other option is to go with the wind sensors and leave it to them. Some say they are real sensitive...

dont know what part of the country you are in but around here it is the wind gusts we have to watch for. between 10-15 mph for sure, and ours would come in also. one gust of wind over 15mph and that might be all she wrote.

The one advantage of the electric if it does go on the roof only the fabirc ends up there. The arms will fold up into the travel position...Wonder how I know that?

If I am not sitting under it or around it, it goes up.
Takes me less than 5 minutes to put up and mine is manual.
Currently traveling out West here and the wind can come up in a hurry.

Even at home in Ohio, if I leave camp or go to bed, awning goes up.
I haven't lost one yet and with a $500 deductible, don't want to.

JMHO,
Doug

my neighbor has a nice setup for his electric awning on his deck....it's a wind meter that automatically retracts the awning when the wind exceeds a designated mph.

I use the cork screw dog anchors, some rope and 2 cam lock straps to keep very slight tension on the awning arms. I anchor the ends straight down. We have only used the electric awning since last August but we used the manual awning for 5 years and never had an issue when anchored down. I hate taking the awning down because we always have stuff under it like chairs, shoes and sometimes a little fridge.

We do the same thing with the corkscrews and straps. Here in NC, afternoon or evening storms can come up very quickly with heavy rains and high winds. We have been through a couple of storms with gusts up to 50 MPH and the awning stayed put.

So I have the strap and screw setup from my old manual awning. You have used this setup on the electric awning and it works. Just don't put as much pressure on it. Am I understanding you guys correctly. This will be our first trip out and it is not looking like a very nice weekend. So I would really like to keep the awning out to keep stuff dry. Thanks for all your help.

Have used the strap down method to, but if a storm or hi wind is expected, you are taking an expensive risk keeping your awning out. Cover your stuff with a $10 blue tarp not a $$$ awning.

I like sitting outside even in rain but if wind starts gusting over 20mph I usually put the awning in. Depending on direction I'll leave it out or put away at a lower or higher wind speed. I never leave it out if I'm leaving the campsite for an extended period.

So my dad and I built two sets of these awning supports made of PVC this weekend. The ones shown here. Had to do allot of trimming for the top support cradles and it is a little difficult at first to drill all the hole aligned. But we made it work. Will let you know how it works after our week long trip the first week of August. It looks however it should work well. Thank you for the directions.

I bring my awning in every night and never leave my 5'er with the awning out. Pushing the button is just too easy and then I don't have to worry about it.

So the awning supports seem to work pretty good. We got a good storm while away and I did end up pulling my awning in. There is still nothing holding the material in the back by the camper. for my manual awning I would tie it down then use those plastic flap stoppers that connect to the top rail and fabric. wonder if they make anything like that for the electric awnings. I did witness my nieghbors camper awning rip from the camper about 8 inches he had the front tied down but no flap protection. I agree it is easier pulling them in and out. But then there is the WIFE who gets mad we cant leave it out as much as the manual one. She hates I pull it in when we get rain and wind not to mention the dew on everything in the morning. She loves the camper but hates the awning she wants me to bring it back and have a manual awning put on it. I like not having the arms to hit my head on. Still trying to figure this thing out.
