Awning for slideout

Has anyone purchased and installed an awning over their slideout?

I haven't done it yet but am planning on doing it next year. I have read articles on how to do it and it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to do.? I also have noticed that the place I bought my trailerfrom sometimes sells them and installs them for as cheap as I can buy one. Are you wondering which one to purchase.

Yes, I'm more interested in what others are buying but installation tips would be welcomed too. Thanks for the reply.

I got one (Carefree of Colorado) and would not get another one esp from them but from any other company as well.. they make a horrible flapping noise in the breeze.. and when it rains you have to pull the slideout in to get it to dump water off the cover..

Yes, way too much trouble. Plus how do you clean under the slide awning (dirt- debris etc...) Besides slide gaskets should be cleaned and lubed each year and it's too hard to reach under an awning..

I bought the Air Wedge, they do a great job to control the flapping of the awning. Also keeps the water from pooling. I have 3 Carefree slideout awnings. I use a leaf blower to clean between the awning & slide

I do not have the slide out awnings but the folks that I know that do put a cheap, blow up beach ball between the awning and the top of the slide. Stops the water from pooling and the wind flapping. May need 2 if the awning is long.

We just purchased a brand new camper from a jayco dealer in the business for over 40 years and he said not to install them. He said the dirt builds up under them and they are a pain to clean. Also talked about water build up on them. We wanted one but decided he was right. Good luck on whatever you choose.

Ernie - thanks for the reply and congrats on being a retired, cancer survivor! I like that you are living life to the fullest.

I just had a look at the Airwedge website. It took me a minute to understand that it goes under a slideout awning to prevent water & dirt buildup. Cool product. Do you like the awnings that you have?

Best regards,

Tim

If they are installed with the tension adjusted properly they work great. Installed the slideout/window awning combo on our 2001 Desinger MH and it was fine. The two that came factory installed on our SENECA have functioned flawlessly for the last 4 years.

Seann, what is your issue with the Carefree awning besides flapping and holding water? Did you get poor service? Is the awning of poor quality?

Thanks again for your response.

Tim without getting to much into it I dealt directly with Carefree on buying a slide out awning going through a camping world in Denver area.. They were the worst company I have ever dealt with as far as caring about the customer... then when I was camping in California the gear on the power awning failed.. I called them and they sent me to a place that had not been a carefree dealer in years... I called them back again and they said I could remove the fabric and have my dealer at home fix it all under warranty... when my dealer at home called them they said they knew nothing about me and never talked to me ever.. Lucky for my Jayco fixed it under customer good will... if you want the whole sordid story message me privately

We have slide out awnings and like them. They help keep the slides a little cooler from the sun , they keep leaves off the slide outs and they keep the slide out dry from the rain.

The ones on the SENECA are Carefree and the one I installed on the 2001 was also Carefree. (sorry for the delayed reply, just saw your post)

I have them on my slides, no problem whatsoever. When I want to clean under the awning I put the front end of the trailer higher than the back and use the extended brush we got from CW and get on a step stool or ladder and wash under the awnings. When washed then get the hose and rinse it off. As far as lubing the gaskets, I bring the slides in about a foot and go inside and get on the step stool and spray the gasket from the inside then take a rag and spread the lube around, Another guy I know takes a small paint roller and makes it really wet and does the outside part of the gasket. Also the awning does keep the slides a little cooler from the sun. I really like them. They were a little expensive tho.
