Awning Issue

Just a little note concerning the awnings. When I went to open mine this weekend, it stuck on one side. I just had it out 2 weeks ago. Anyways, the gas struts had stuck closed. I went across the street to the dealer. He said to spray some slide-out lube on it. He said that if by chance it happens again, stop and lube it. Otherwise, it will cause issues with the rest of the awning parts. Parts alone to fix that possible damage he said was around $850. So, be careful! BTW, the slide-out lube worked fine. He said no wd40 as it is too thin and doesn't last. Anyone else had a problem like this?

We have a manual awning. I think that one should only use a dry Teflon lube because any wet spray or grease is going to collect dirt and cause sticking. It also makes it harder to clean the tracks.

After reading this thread, I spent a little time today taking my awnings ends apart and lubing them with silicone spray. Also did the struts.

WD-40 is just as thin as Slilcone spray but it is not a good long term lube product. It actually displaces water and other lubricants.

I noticed my electric awning is quieter after this maintenance.

Too late for me. The piston froze open and bent when closing; a support arm snapped as well. Parts are being shipped directly from Carefree on the 31st and installed on 11/13. What a PIA! I too had been opening and closing my awning every third day it seemed; never had a hint at problems...

Was it covered under warranty?

My warranty expired the month before the damage occurred. Jayco has offered a "one time good-will" repair on this item. It has not cost me anything yet - will know more when I have it fixed. Regardless, Jayco has been wonderful to deal with since Day 1 of ownership. Personally, I plan on sticking with them for the long-haul...
