Awning motor on 2013 eagle

The awning seems to go out ok but if I extend it all the way and try to retract it try’s to come back in but can’t. If I go out with someone else on the switch and push a little on the right arm it will start and retract all the way. Is there a motor in both of the arms? I haven’t tried to take it apart yet but I do see a wire in the right side so I would think there are 2 and have a bad connection or bad motor

Only one motor and that is on the right arm. (front side of rig).

Would that point to a weak motor going bad?

Could be a broken or weak spring. Could also need some grease on the gearing. The motors are very similar to those used on power windows.

It could be caused by binding. My electric awning has no spring, only the motor on the front awning arm. The other just follows it's lead.

Binding of the fabric or the mechanical arms may cause it. I would try and clean and lubricate the arms and the piston on each side and the tracks that they run in on the side of the rig with some silicone spray.

One thing to check is your battery (12v) voltage, if it is low that could cause such an issue. ~CA

The awning should have a spring inside the long tube that runs all the way across. If the motor is ever disconnected, you have to not let the spring unwind. The is a hole in the shaft to insert a pin to hold it when disconnecting the motor.

Electric awnings do not have an internal spring. They use the gas strut as the spring mechanism.

I would first look at three items;
  1. Verify the awning arms are not bent/damaged.
  2. Clean the tracks really well. Then use some some dry lube spray like silicone, nothing that will stay wet or it will attract dirt. Spray down the tracks. Spray a little lube on the pivot and rotating points.
  3. When the awning is fully opened, wipe down the gas strut shaft and apply some silicone to them too.

If this does not help, I would check your voltage at the motor and confirm you have a good ground to the TT frame.
