Awning question

I have a 2012 Jayco with the CareFree automatic awning. It is starting to fray at the ends nearest the coach. It's 5 years old and I was told the awning last between 2 and 5 years. I wax the RV twice a year and treat the rubber roof twice a year also but I guess there is nothing you can do to treat the awning material. I was just wondering how many years others got before they had to replace their awning material. The new material I'm getting, made by CareFree, has a heavy thick gauge material that is on the first 12" from the coach so that when it is closed the material that is exposed to the sun is thicker than the regular stuff, suppose to almost double the life of the awning. $670 dollars installed,

Yea, my 2012 awning did the same thing. The replacement cost me about $150 and I will be doing the labor (with some help).

Our 2009 Greyhawk came with a Colorado Carefree electric Awning. We bought the Motorhome new in April of 2009. When we traded in the Motorhome in for our current Bungalow in May of 2017 (8 years later), the awning fabric looked great. No rips, tears or frayed ends. The last two years we camped seasonally in the motorhome, so the awning was out 24/7 for about 4 months.

I guess Colorado has really cheapened the fabric they use or perhaps ours came with the heavier duty fabric. I would not be a happy camper if our awning fabric only lasted 5 years.

Hey Joe, our 2012 has the Carefree awning as well and although it's not fraying at the ends, they are starting to wrinkle where the stitching is. I'll be replacing it next year. Already replaced the 2 Carefree slide toppers on the unit.

Thanks for the replies. Mine sits out in the hot sun here in San Jacinto, Ca. I guess 5 years on the OEM material is not to bad.

Just throwing this out there. My friend had an old Jayco motorhome that he was still using when it was about 15 or 20 years old. I think it still had the original Colorado on it. The spring had died and he used to roll it up by hand!

sorry for taking this a bit off topic but since you mention it, what do you treat the rubber roof with?
