Axle Shackle

Hello Everyone,

I have a 2018 jayco jayflight 245 RLS. On our last trip I happened to notice that the top bolt of the axle shackle had come loose and was hanging out and the shackle bent. I was able to get the bolt back in and get a nut on it to get home however I am looking at a permanent repair. My question is this... would you just put a new shackle/lock nut on? Or should I replace all shackles/bolts? Is this regular maintenance?

Thanks for all the help.

Wow, that could have been way worse!

It looks like one shackle plate has a bend in it.
If your bushings and bolts look OK I would hammer it flat and re-install with good lock nuts.
Of course check all other bolts and replace the nuts if needed.
If you see wear on the bushing that goes through the spring eye or elongated holes in the shackle plates you may want to replace all of them.
Grease-able shackle bolt kits are available also.
Probably good to check everything over at least yearly.

I would take this opportunity to upgrade to heavier shackles, better bushings and wet bolts. I do the MORryde CRE 3000 kit with wet bolts. There are several manufacturers to choose from that all make kits. I am partial to the MORryde products.

Your bushings might be the standard nylon. Great time to upgrade to brass wet bushings. They will last much longer and can be lubricated. Plenty of videos on line or not that expensive to have a trailer shop do it.

I think i'd do the same. Upgrade to the wet bolt and a MORryde kit.

Do the Moryde wet bolt kit and never look back.

I had my RV shop upgrade to heavy duty shackles and wet bolts. Ours is a 2018 also and the bushings were actually in pretty good shape. But the peace of mind was worth a couple hundred bucks.

Like others said, get the morryde wet bolt kit and upgrade everything. I had a leaf spring fail on me last year and noticed that my shackles were starting to turn oval.

Found the wet bolt kit for about $90 that included new and much thicker shackles. It was a very easy DIY job to change out myself. I jacked up one side at a time, removed my wheels and supported the axles. Removed the old bolts and shackles and replaced. Very quick job.

The bonus is that I no longer have that popping and creaking sound when I drive through the campground at low speed.
