Backing up with equilzer bars on or off?

Should I take the bars off the equilizer hitch when backing up the trailer or can I leave them attached?

I never take mine off to back up.

Take off the sway bar, but leave the weight distribution bars on when backing up

We take the bars off if we need to cut a sharp corner to back into someplace. Someone here suggested that and it does indeed make it a lot easier to get into a tight spot.

It may depend on the brand of hitch you have. What brand of WDH do you have?

I leave the bars on with my Equal-i-zer brand hitch. The only time I take them off is when I'm unhitching from the trailer.

If you have the Equalizer brand, than leave them on. If it is a different brand WDH, it depends. The primary issue is the accessory anti sway shock absorber looking unit (technical name has been forgotten). If you have one of them on the unit, always take it off first, or you will bend it.

I use the Husky Centerline, essentially the same design as the Equal-I-Zer, and we typically remove them. They don't have to be removed, but it doesn't make it easier since they are designed to keep the trailer straight behind the truck. We remove the bars about 90% of the time. The only time I keep them on is if we have a large pull through site, which is rare where we camp.

I've had the Equal-I-zer brand hitch on 3 different trailers.

I need to jackknife my trailer to get it into my driveway every time we come home and I have never taken them off nor have I had any issues.

We do have the plastic pads on the L brackets and would not be without them.

I neglected to remove my sway bar once and it made a louder than usual popping sound when backing up. I didn't like the sound at all and have disconnected every time since.

Equal-I-zer brand with the plastic pads = Disconnect bars only when completely disconnecting from TV. It has a different design and work both forward and backwards. Never had an issue with sharp turns while backing into camping spots.
