Backup camera mounted on bumper?

Hey Everyone,

I am thinking about getting a wired backup camera and I was wondering if anyone mounted one on their bumper.

Because this will be wired I'd rather not mount it on the top of trailer and then have to run the wire down and then under the trailer. It seems to me that mounting it on the bumper would give you the visibility that you need but with an easier installation.

Has anyone ever done this before?

Thanks

Mine is mounted on the bumper, just off to the side of the spare tire.

I've got mine mounted the same way, works great. I use it as a full time observation system, and I get a much larger field of view than my friend who has the Furrion system.

Do your wired cameras use a separate screen or the same one as your trucks back up camera?

My camera is attached to a wifi transmitter on the front of my camper. I use an old cell phone to attach wirelessly to the camera and watch it through that.

Cool!

I just bought this:

In theory it connects to the built in screen in the truck. The connection is under the truck just below the tailgate. I have a feeling it will be a bit of a PITA to connect and reconnect but we'll see. I'll probably look at some sort of switch in the future.

Do you have a link to the wifi transmitter you are using? Your setup seems to be the best of both worlds...wired to the front of the trailer to minimize interference and then wireless to the truck.

It wasn't this exact one, but something like this, wifi 802 transmitter. There is a picture of it installed on the front of the trailer. I use my old android cell phone to view the image. It works pretty well.

I just ran RCA cables from the camera to the front of the trailer. I tapped into the running lights for power, so the camera and transmitter both come on when the lights are on. I always tow with lights on, so it's perfect for me.

I really like this idea. I already use an old Android tablet while towing for Torque Pro gauges. Is there any lag with this setup since it's WiFi? Any signal dropping issues? Thanks!

Sometimes it loses signal briefly. It's not perfect, but it works most of the time.

Backup Camera

I hadn't thought about mounting the camera on the bumper. I may give that a try before mounting on top backside of the RV. Should be an easier run.
I just purchased, a wired, Ford camera and TPMS system for my 5th wheel. The system will integrate with the SYNC 3 system in the truck. I prefer things simple in the cab. I also purchased a harness and a mounting box to install the 7 prong/12 prong connector (supplied with kit) from Nichols Welding (https://nicholsmanufacturingandweldingservices.com.
This allows the trailer cable to be plugged in on the inside of the truck bed along with the RV plug. Nice product. Ford has it going over the tailgate to plug into bumper receptacle.
I will post pics once fully installed and functional.

Installing on the trailer seems like it would be easy, but how is it wiring it into the truck?

Personally I like having it mounted high up so you can see traffic well behind you over any vehicle directly behind you.

It plugs into a wire underneath the truck just below the tailgate. Unplug the wire running to the camera in the tailgate and plug this one in. As I said above, you have to lay on your back to do it but it is pretty easy.

So it plugs into the trucks connector for the backup camera?
