Bad tank gage

Our black water tank gage is useless, never shows less than 2/3, sometimes even full, when just drained. I understand this is a common problem.
Is there anything that can be done to fix this?
I have used the flush feature several times, no effect.
The grey water gage works fine.
The trailer is 6 months old.

Same here. I am thinking of warranty service. I have several small items that need looked at.

The black gauges never work, they get tp and gunk on the sensors. If you hose the tank out they will read empty again. I am not sure why everyone gets so hung up on what their black tank reads. You will never fill the black tank up in a weekend, we can go almost 12 days before we are completely full and need to dump and our tank is only 25-30 gal. When it starts to splash out when you flush....it's full. Don't worry about the gauge.

Yep, you're right, it is a very common problem with several suggestions on how to fix. I would recommend putting a solution of Dawn and Borax with a couple of bags of ice and then driving your rig (the more curves the better) several miles.

It worked for mine and now I always use the solution after dumping the tanks and before driving home. Hope that helps

There is also a thread on here about replacing the sensors with a new type that is less likely to fail.

Welcome to the wonderful world of camping

I recently discussed this with the RV dealer. He said to use more chemical. He also recommended a biodegradable product that uses bacterial enzymes to break down "stuff". I used it and it worked! My black tank was constantly reading full - mind you, I just got my HTT in Feb and have camped in it 4 times, just me.
This is the product -

They tell you that because they make a lot of money on the chemicals.

We don't use the chemicals, we use dry laundry soap and tank flush on dumping. We camp ALOT (60 days last year).

Yes! Like I said above all you need is a flashlight and 1 working eye and you will know when it is full. Seriously if you are questioning whether or not you can fill a black tank up in a weekend or even a week dump 5 gal pails into the toilet until the water is coming up into the toilet. 5 or 6 five gal pails is A LOT of pee...even for an average family of 4. I don't even check my black tank level unless I have been camping for at least a week. You know how full it is getting every time you flush. Really a none issue that most newbees seem to get quite anxious about in my opinion.

Black tank gauges don't go bad - they're born that way.

As a newbie, I appreciate the good suggestions on how to check the level (yea, flashlight!) and not rely on a marginal sensor. It took us about an hour to realize that the sensor wasn't going to do the job - and that was with a tank that only had liquids in it.

Just don't drop the flashlight down the hole....it makes for a bad time. Don't ask me how I know. ;-)

I just dump the black tank once a week with just the two of us using it.

Curious for those who don't dump on every trip ... how long between trips? We're going out for a long weekend in a few weeks, but it would probably be another couple of weeks before we go again. Would you actually leave it for two weeks? Seems silly since we're staying in a full hookup site anyway.

I'd sure dump it before I left for the two weeks. I doesn't really take that long to do.

Thank to all for your helpful comments, I think I will try the digester, have had good luck with that king of chemicals for keeping the house plumbing clear.
I am fixing to call Jayco with a list of problems, so I will mention the sensor problem.
Our camper does not travel, we stay at the campground for about five to six months, so it is more like a movable condo. It travels about two miles to storage for the summer, then returns in early December.

Thanks, that what we have been doing too, but the user's guide recommends the tank be at least 2/3 full, so it would be nice to have a working sensor.

That means the outside sink is plumbed to the blackwater tank. That is how you filled it up in 3 days..
