Be careful towing this season!

https://m.facebook.com/groups/604718...urce=typeahead

Sorry this is not a 1/2 ton so please ignore the title.. but it is a reminder to be careful out there towing. I know this is not a 1/2 ton but it sure reminds me I need to watch my weights and ensure that I'm safe on the road when pulling my trailer. I hear of stuff like this happening but never have seen this so close to home.

This is a good reminder for those 1/2 ton-ers out there.
I am so happy I took the advice of my brother-n-law whom is a diesel mechanic for over 40 years, and went to a 3/4 ton truck for my TT!
He kept telling me, "it's not that the engine can't handle it, you need to worry about braking and going around turns because he's seen many trucks & TT turned over on their sides. My best friend was working at an RV dealership when I asked him about 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton and his reply was "it only takes one time (short pull) to ruin your rear axle" and also advised me on the 3/4 ton!!

I have my days where I wish I knew more about towing before I bought my truck. The dealer told me I was buying more than enough but after running the numbers from what I have learned from this forum I'm at the max with my white hawk . I know this guy either has a 3/4 or 1 ton but he is going through a part of I-90 I know very well. There are lots of winding turns and steep hills. I can only assume he may have been to confident and was pushing his speeds. The highway was blocked for hours.

It's an F-250 or 350, so a 3/4 or 1 ton.

Maybe if he had 1/2 ton, he would be more careful.

It looks like a king ranch so I'm pretty sure it's a 350. It's just scary to think that the trailer came unhitched and the truck is on the other side of the jersey barrier.

That truck is a 2005-2007 super duty. F250 or F350

Here is another problem. I don't see safety chains. Where they not connected? That should've tore the hitch off the truck in an accident like that if it was properly attached. That should've had more damage to the hitch of the TT. Just saying

Anybody know what cause the accident? High wind / lite trailer? Driving too fast with trailer? Swerve to avoid hitting deer? Need more informations.

King Ranch trim was/is available in the 250 and 350, so not a true indication. It wouldn't matter anyway, unless he was overloaded in the bed, too. Truck looks in good shape for the concrete wave surfing he did. I was trying to see if there was a WDH, but can't make it out. I'm suspecting someone didn't configure properly, had no WDH, and maybe no chains. Trailers I've seen go through this before had their tongues destroyed from chains holding on and ripping loose. I think the only thing that saved the vehicle occupants was the trailer breaking loose. They lived to shower off the excrement that likely filled the cab, if they survived a heart attack.

I tried to find the original news story, but what I found had no more details. I could save the photos and zoom in, and was able to see both safety chains and WDH bars. The three women standing nearby appeared to be unhurt but most likely pretty shook up. Could not get enough detail of truck to see model.
Read recently that one of four traffic accidents are attributed to smartphones. Maybe time to rename those. Just sayin'.

Looks like wind played a part. Just an observation...

I seen somewhere that wind blew a tractor trailer over Chesapeake Bay bridge. If wind can blow a trailer being pull behind a 26,000lbs semi then 1 ton truck doesn't stand a chance against the wind.

I see a lot of pure speculation, but since most single vehicle accidents (and most accidents period) are caused by driver error, I'm holding out for that unless other facts come to light. We all know that people tow too heavy, too fast, improperly set up.... then there are the simple issues of driver inexperience, or being distracted at the wrong moment.

Yes it could be wind, or some mechanical malfunction, but I'm going with driver error in lieu of any other mitigating factor - the odds are with me.

LOL, that's clever
But seriously I am appreciative of the post & pic's
It certainly does make me more aware of my limitations and to reconsider my thoughts of spouting so much pride about my 3/4 ton

It also makes me wonder - since the hitch detached, if he didn't have it hooked properly or forgot to lock down the ball??

I don't know that it was because it wasn't attached right. Look at the fact that his trailer is on one side of the divider and the truck (mostly) is on the other side. I don't think the trailer flipped over the divider but rather flopped on the side and slid to a stop so most likely the two were attached for a while and it lifted the truck enough that it managed to get tossed to the other side of the divider.

The two probably finally separated ways just because of the forces involved and something eventually failed.
