With that said, I agree with the others in that an EMS is a much better choice than a simple surge protector. But, I think they would also agree that buying a surge protector only is infinitely better than no protection at all. So, if cost is truly a factor for someone, get a good surge protector for now and then pick up an EMS when the opportunity arises.

Lastly, on the portable vs. hard wired question. When my unit got fried last year, I had to send it to them for repair. Being a portable unit, I was able to swap it out with another one that I purchased in the interim very easily. If it was hard wired, it would have been a little more time consuming on my end. Again, not a deal breaker either way, but something to consider when making a decision on what model to buy.
Exactly why I have a spare PT50X and I have had to put my spare into service several times when my primary took a hit. Well worth the peace of mind for me as a full timer.

Absolutely nothing wrong with my wiring. Unit was 4 years old, and no fault codes were showing on scroll. Good thing was, PI gave me a new one, but sent the new one before I could request a portable unit. If its going to have a melt down, I'd rather it be outside my unit, not inside.
I ordered the PT30X. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Keep in mind the OP asked for a "Surge Protector" and also asked to keep $$ in mind.

That said, as new RVers, we knew we needed an SP after our first outing and bought the Camco Power Defender (30A).
Knowing what I know now and being able to justify the difference, I'd seriously consider the Progressive for all the many reasons stated.
Our Camco has done well for us and if I sold the camper, I't be a "come with" as opposed to a "stay behind".
I should mention I got it for $189 when Jet was having a special.
We have no regrets buying it.

With such positive reviews on the progressive, I think I will go that route.

Thanks guys

Very smart choice! It's one expense you'll not regret.
