When I winterize I leave both dump valves open the entire time so all the water I push out of the plumbing with the pink stuff can exit. My trailer is tall enough for a five gallon bucket to fit under the outlet pipe and there's never more than that in the fresh side of the system. After that I leave the tanks dry for the winter and then when I sanitize in the spring I toss some chemical in the black tank and go. Long story short, 1.

I try to drain the tanks throughly at my last dump. If I cannot, I place a 5 gallon bucket under the drain. Open the black tank valve and let it drain. It might only be a gallon. I'll let the grey water tank drain on to the grass. After blowing out my water lines. I close the valves. Let any rv antifreeze sit in the tanks all winter.

In reality if there is a small amount of water in the tank (not pipes) it will do no harm, as the surface area on the tank is so large, the frozen water cannot break anything.

Flush, empty, close valves, pour in antifreeze so it reaches the valves.
