Black tank odor

We have a 212QB and when the black tank is not even close to being full the odor comes up when you flush. The vent on the roof isn’t obstructed in any way. If anyone has had this problem before I could use some advise on what to do. Will be looking into getting some type of scope to look around inside the tank when we get home.

Sounds like the vent tube may be hanging too low in your tank. Once the water level gets to the bottom of the tube, it cannot vent anymore.

You can take your vent cap off and see if you can gently pull your vent tube up a little higher. Don't pull it out of your tank though, it's a fine balance.

I just pour a tiny bit of fabric softener down the toilet to get rid of the oder that’s unavoidable

If your roof vent has a fan, is it running when you flush? Never run the fan when flushing because the fan will suck up black tank odors in an instant.

The fan is off and the vent is closed so I dont think thats an issue. When we get home from this trip I think I will get an inspection camera from Harbor Freight or Amazon. Hopefully I can mount the camera on a 90 degree angle on a stick to see inside the tank. If the pipe has slid down I will need another person to pull it up while I watch on the camera.

I'd get a wand and manually clean the tank. Yep, it's a dirty job but it could solve the odor issue. I bought the Camco flexible wand with the rotating head and it works great.

The solution recipe here works well for us so far. Also lots of good info on tank maintenance. Never used their services, just found their info useful.
