Black water tank question
Do you leave it open or closed when hooked up to a sewer line? Some say leave it open, some say close it to avoid sewer flies and open it every couple of days to dump it. What do you do? If you leave it open I guess the chemicals don't do any good.

You DO NOT leave it open. The reason being you need water in the tank or solids will harden and clog the pipes, and cause "poop pyramids" at the bottom of the tank. Let it fill to 1/2 or more, preferably more, before dumping. Water in the tank = success with black tanks, lack of water= problems IMO. The grey tank valve can be left open.

By all means keep the black tank valve closed. I dump ours once a week. I also keep the grey tank closed the last two days before dumping just to help rinse out the hose.

I have never met someone who would ever give advice to leave the black tank open, maybe the grey but never the black.

Crabman and all the others dead on. Never ever leave the black valve open and dump when more than 2/3 full. If it is not at least 2/3 full and you need to dump to travel, then add water before you dump. The solids need the water flow to flush out the tank.
Also unless freezing weather, always put some water back in tank so it will slosh around when traveling and break down any stubborn solids. Better units all have factory flushing systems to help. If yours does not, look into buying a wand etc to handle the job.

I guess closed have it, Thanks for the answers. I have been leaving it closed and dumping every couple of days and then flushing with gray water tank.

Joe leave it till it is full or you have to move... (then fill it with fresh water before dumping) .. The longer the "stuff" sits in the black tank the more it breaks down and you get a better dump...

black water tank
I always leave the black tank gate valve closed. I dump as needed. Usually after dumping the black water, when I know I am leaving, I will close the gate valve and add fresh water to black tank to allow it to slosh around while travelling. Helps dislodge any residue. Only time I do not do this is when I have completed my last summer outing before winterizing.
As with every other poster I never heard of leaving gate valve opened.
