Broken Door Catch (Holder)

Hello, everyone! The receiving part of the door catch recently broke on my slam latch storage door. As you can see by the photo, it's looks like it was attached with rivets or something??

Before I go at with a drill, I wanted to check with the experts here to see if anyone has replaced this before or any advice for approaching this?

Thanks!
Derek

I would try a 1/8 inch drill in the center . Should destroy the inside without damaging the metal the latch is mounted to. You may have to go up one size on the pop rivets. Try to to enlarge the original hole if you can.

Thanks, Roger. I’ll try that today. I was thinking that I could use sheet metal screws instead of rivets to replace the latch. Can you think of a reason why I shouldn’t?

Thanks
Derek

Answered my own question after I drllled out the old rivets. Not really clean enough for screws at this point. Hopefully, I can get fire some larger rivets in there.

Why didn't they just use screws!?!? Ugh

I think the screws would loosen up sooner.
