Broken Shackle on tandem axle Flight, anyone have suggested upgrade? Shackle length? Smart owner would have measured before he left broken unit to go home :-(

What year and model tt do you have?

Decades ago broke a set outside Helena MT, local shop squeezed us in, and installed longer ones on each side (what they had in stock). Lifted the tt up a bit.

MW604,

Welcome to JOF

I have 2018 Jay Flight 24RBS, Dual Lippert Axles, 3,500lb rating each, leaf springs are 1 3/4" wide (sit on top of axles), w/15" aluminum rims. My 'equalizer' dimensionally looks very much like yours.

My shackle length is 3 3/4", and the hole centers are 2 1/4" (approx).

I plan to upgrade mine shortly with a 'wet bolt kit' which included heavy duty shackles. Haven't purchased the kit yet.

Bob

Bob, I put on a kit from etrailer, that had a center cushion rocker and all HD shackles and wet bolts. If you want I can publish the part #. Jay.

Mine has the longer equalizer. Did it over a weekend, one side on Sat, the other side on Sunday. I watched a lot of YouTube videos first. One showed using large C clamps to press in the new shackle bolts rather than pounding the in with a hammer. Pounding them in can bend the spring hangers. Also used a socket over the Zerk fitting to protect it when inserting the bolt using the C clamp. Before trying to remove the old shackle bolts I sprayed them with Liquid Wrench the night before to help in their removal. A couple were pretty difficult to remove. Good videos on eTrailer's website as well.

Yes, that would be great.

I put a wet-bolt kit on my prior TT and it worked out great. I've been spraying Lithium Grease into the cheap OEM plastic bushings on my present TT, but always had plans to upgrade.

The kit that I put on my 24RBS, is part number:K71-652-00. It had cushion equalizer, and all the shackles, wet bolts, and bushings to do the job. The new shackles were very thick compared to the stock ones. The kit is for 5 5/8 bolt spacing which fit perfectly. Even though my unit is a 2020 model, my bolts and shackles were worn. I had to put on of the bolts in backwards so that the serrated shoulder of the bolt would grip the spring hanger. There are pictures in my mod thread. I think the kit is like $273 now. Please feel free to ask any further questions. Jay

I bought this when I replaced my leaf springs about a month ago. It was around $85 when I bought it. Money WELL spent. All new shackles that are TWICE as thick as the stock ones. And they are a standard size, 3 3/4". Replacement bronze bushings and wet bolts. They make it substantially quieter.

My Jayflight had a Cree3000 equalizer already, but its easy to upgrade if you are swapping shackles and adding wet bolts. Good luck. Its fairly easy to do, you just need to jack up one side of the trailer at a time to do it.

Wet bolt kit. Replaced mine immediately after purchase. The stock shackles use plastic bushings that wear the bolts and shackle eyes, just like in your picture.

Thank you for all the feedback and suggestions, ended up ordering a Dexter Axle kit. ETrailer was super helpful on the phone, so just pulled the trigger. Not much of an e-commerce guy, so we will see. Two day shipping was what closed the deal. Will keep you posted! Thanks again!

Installed a wet bolt kit on our 2020 212QBW, before we even used it. We were going to wait and install the kit after our first season in it, then decided lets just do it now, very glad we did, because 2 of the shackles were missing the plastic bushing.

Spend some time watching the eTrailer installation videos, Also watch a few on YouTube. Some on YT are good, some not so good.

Connect your trailer to your TV for added security to keep the trailer from moving while jacked up. Grease all of the zerk fittings before you put the wheels back on and lower it to the ground.

Have a fun time while you’re at it…..

Wet Bolt installation

I too have the wet bolt kit & CRE3000 suspension on my Octane T-30F. I added the "X" factor braces to "hopefully" eliminate the broken spring hanger issue.

One thing I would remind those who are installing the wet bolt kit. Insure the "hole" in the wet bolt is not facing down when you install. If it is, it could get blocked by the brass bushing when the load is on the suspension & it will not take grease. As long as the hole is at 3 or 9 o'clock is best. The person I bought the camper from ordered it with this and several other upgrades. Point being about 50% of the wet bolts would not take grease due to the hole in them facing down. We had to lift the frame to get the weight off the suspension & rotate the affected wet bolts to correct the issue. Now they all take grease correctly. Just a tip if installing.
