Buying Hail Damaged TT from Dealership?

Dealership: Camping World in Mesquite, TX
Trailer: 2017 Jayco Jayflight SLX 284BHSW

While looking at travel trailers yesterday, we came across a Jayco yesterday that had our favorite layout. We have honestly never considered getting an aluminum siding but the price is under our budget! It's a 2017 Jayco Jayflight SLX 284BHSW. It has a lot of small little dents from hail damage on one side and the front. They wanted 22k for it but I offered 17k and they accepted. They told me the title is good and is not totaled or salvaged, I am unsure if they claimed it, comes with a warranty on the roof, and the unit will still come with Jayco's 2 year warranty. They also said it came with the Good Sam Elite package which I assume is some kind of roadside assistance program.

Only reason I am considering this is because we don't want to spend more than 20k on a trailer and we were going to settle for a floor plan that we would have to eventually upgrade from in 5-10 years when our kids would outgrow a single bunk bed but with this TT, we could plan on keeping it a long time (10+ years).

Any feedback is appreciated!

Congratulations and welcome to the forum.

Our alum sided Jay Flight has small dents on all 4 sides from 1 storm. No roof, skylight, or window damage so no water intrusion. We happily took the insurance company $$ and kept our trailer. It wasn't totaled.

In our opinion, the dents are small and when we are ready to sell the trailer, the dents won't matter much if at all because of how fast RVs depreciate. And when it storms now, we have no worries about hail dents in the siding.

Go for it! Siding always can be replaced if you wish someday.

You should be able to squeeze more out of them for a damaged unit. The MSRP on that TT is $25,500, normal 30% discount would put you at $18k for a new undamaged TT. Are they letting it go out the door for 17k, or still adding Delivery, PDI, Tax, Plates, Etc.

Chad,

Welcome to JOF

In some cases hail damage can be more then just cosmetic, especially around the roof area...., I would personally inspect the roofing material "very" carefully, because hail damage isn't covered under the roofing manufacture's material 10 year warranty.

Hail damage could also mean hidden moisture damage...., look for signs of exterior/interior moisture intrusion (stains, dimples on interior wall surface, cracked skylight covers, vents, etc.). Look for signs that the axles/frame may have been exposed to flooding (recent Texas floods). Look for signs of repair.

Review Jayco's owners manual in respect to owner responsibilities and terms/conditions of warranty.

Bob

Don't worry, they claimed it and bought it back for penny's. Read the reviews of camping world before you make that offer. On a new one with no damage you can buy at 30% off easy.

If you can get an out the door price of $17000 and the roof looks ok and doesn't leak it might be worth it. If you develop a leak a year down the road and take it in I'm sure jayco won't cover it under warranty due to hail damage.

Good luck

Good points above. I would also get quotes on a new identical unit from online dealers such as Rv One or Keystone RV center. Once you know what a new one can be had for, with hail damage I would offer several thousand less. You can have a quote in a few hours via email.

Around here everyone gets hit with hail eventually. I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as the roof is in good shape.
No idea of that's a good deal or not. I'm not up to speed on discounts.

I also think the price drop is not enough. Our hail damage which was just cosmetic, visible if you look for it. Ended up with a check for about 6,000 $ for a $14,000 unit.

BUT, remember that if insurance paid on the hail damage you may not be able to get paid if there is future damage to the same area. Especially if it is noted on the title.

Looking on RVTrader the lowest price for a new 2017 with no damage is $17,400. While most of the Camping World stores listed want $23k and up for the same unit. I don't like or trust Camping World and will never buy anything from them.

Wow, thanks everyone for responding.

I forgot to mention that they have 4 units that I can pick from that have hail damage and they all have the customer value package. I went to RV one and got a hold of a build sheet and it said MSRP was $26,589. If we get it for $17k, that is 36% off MSRP but...I need to figure out if that is enough I guess. I guess I could show more hesitation and try to get it lower? I also did see on RVtrader that other places have them lower but I am not sure how much money it would cost to have it shipped to me and if it is worth it. Everyone told me they won't normally budge from the 20-25% rule unless you are getting it built?

First off all Jaycos come with the Customer Value Package. Another thing to think about is the 2018 models are on some dealer lots and the remaining 2017 models offer a larger discount. I looked at the dealer I bought from and they have 3 on the lot, lowest price listed on a 2017 is just under 17k, I got even more money off the listed discount price. And I know this dealer will ship to your location. Here is a link to that listing.

I would rather buy 2-3 years used with no hail damage for ~$10-$12

I just bought a 2018 284BHSW for 20800. I'd say a 17, with hail damage, I'd go as low as you could, hit them around 13k and see what they say! Worst they can say is no.

My Jayco 28BHBE is hail damage and we bought out the door for $18,500. Dealer said that insurance company won't let them sell for less so they already got money for the damages. To me the dents were minors and I would probably put more dents from my travels so I like the huge $$ saving over the 3 dents.

Sounds like dealer BS to me, why would the insurance company care what the dealer sold it for.

Run, don't walk away. I shopped at this same dealership on hail units just like you did many months back. After spending enough time with them, they lost all my trust and they told me anything to make a sale. Did you check if you could insure it? My insurance wouldn't , nor would many others i called on. They just kept telling me that I must have made a mistake and they sell these units all time an they are flying out the door. I had no confidence a warranty would be honored either. If you have to sell, you will have a tough time, especially if they have to finance. I ended up buying elsewhere(Tulsa, OK) and had a very good experience.

On a used trailer I wouldn't be worried about some hail damage, but for sure check with your insurance company.
On a brand new trailer, which are commonly offered with huge discounts, make sure you are truly getting a deal beyond what is offered on undamaged units.

I usually don't trust salespeople further than I can throw them, and I'm not particularly strong, so it ain't far!
