Buying our first camper Jayco 154BH Thoughts?

We have a family a 6 (4 boys, 10, 5, 3, 1)

Our vehicle is a 2008 Kia Sedona (3,500 lbs)
Should we be ok?

This looks perfect for our budget (our boys don't mind sleeping together)

Years we should look for or stay away from?

Approx price ? found some for $7,000 and even a few new ones for $10,000

Would be nice to get under $5,000

Any other advise would be helpful.

We live in Indiana.

The 154bh is rated for 4, so 6 would be cramped. Those bunks are narrow in the seven foot wide trailers. What about a 185bh for the extra space, or 175bh for the "real" bed?

As for the towing, your TV should handle it.

we are 3 (2 adults and a 6 y/o) and the 154bh is tight, and can't imagine sleeping more than 4 in that size trailer...

I would look at a hybrid, my brother in law has 4 kids under 4 and his hybrid fits him just fine.

Too small

Our first TT was a 154baja. I loved it, but w family of 4 it was too small-ESP as kids grow. Def too cramped for 6. There's a hi-traffic triangle around cooker-door-TV, that everyone bumped into each other. We traded it in n got a bigger TT after 1 year. Don't get me wrong, I got SO many compliments, esp from old timers wanting to downsize their mega rigs.
But for 6...it's too small.

Not only will you be cramped but with 6 people in the van, and all the stuff you'll need for your family, you'll most likely be well over your van's payload.

Guaranteed the 10 year will want/need more space in just a couple of years. A possible solution to being cramped is putting the 10 and 5 year old into a tent. They'll love it and you'll free up some much needed space in that small trailer.

I'd consider six people too damn much for my F150 and X213. If I were you I'd look at getting a more capable van before trying to hitch up a trailer to your Sedona which may very well be near or even over it's GVWR as is. Maybe trade for an older Chevy Express and then you'd have the capacity for something a little more accommodating to six people than a 154BH.

If I understand correctly, 3500 lbs is predicated on having a brake controller, otherwise the limit is 1000 lb. Most tow vehicles run out of payload before they hit the pulling limit. You could look at the door sticker to get your GVWR, and then load up the whole family and go find a scale. That'll tell you how much payload you have left for toys, hitch and trailer tongue.

Have you considered a popup? You can get a lot of bang for your buck that way, especially if you don't want to upsize your tow vehicle. Even a pretty big popup weighs 500+ pounds less than a 154BH and sleeps 6 or 7.

The tongue weight on that puppy is 500 lbs with the trailer devoid of fluids
Your vehicle gvwr is just above 6000 empty
It weighs 4600 leaving you a margin of weight in your vehicle of 1400 lbs. six people and a cargo load may weigh more. That vehicle weight is of course with an empty gas tank
Get thee to a scale and find out if sans trailer you will be overloaded
I have the same size engine a lighter trailer and it's hard enough on it. We only have two people and basically backpacking gear. Our food is mostly dry

Minivans typically have a lot of payload capacity as they're meant to load a lot of people but with 6 you'll probably run out quickly. With a brake controller you should be fine towing. Just remember cargo in the trailer is better than cargo in the TV for payload. However, you'll be limited to 650lbs. We have a 174bh and 4 people and it gets tight. There's no way a 154bh is going to handle 6. The bunks aren't exactly wide enough to sleep 2.

tongue weight on a 154bh is more around 350-390

I had a 184BH Baja and we were 5 people and we out grew it within 6 months, I suggest that you go a little bigger because I had the same thoughts when I got my 184...FYI learn from my costly mistake however I loved that trailer it was bullet proof, no issues.
