Camper maintenance

Hello, So I was wondering what you guys use to clean your rubber roof. I was told a very mild dish soap and it says that in the owners manual. So how do you guys feel about these store bought cleaners and the conditioners that are suppose to protect from UV rays. Also I keep my tires covered, all these new camper owners should realize how important this is. It protects the tire from the sun and dry rotting. This could prevent a blow out. Also check you tire pressure before townig, all your lights and every once in awhile check your lug nuts. Now I know there is allot more to trailer maint, but these are some of the basics. Please add more i always wanna know what others do.

I was looking at an old thread on roof cleaning and according to a Jayco tech [also a Forum member] use Dawn dishwashing liquid. They also use Dawn to clean the awning as well. He said that a lot of the "specific" cleaners were a waste of $. x2 on the tire covers. Always check roof/window caulking to prevent leaks.

correct me if I am wrong here but doesn't Dawn and other soaps like that strip the wax off the trailer? I know some people wax there trailer and I have alwasy been told that dish soap will strip the wax right off.

I think you're right, most dishwashing detergents do strip wax. (They used to, anyway.)

After I clean my roof with Dawn (and a medium bristle brush), I wash the rest of the trailer with car wash.

Do you guys do anything else to the roof after washing it with Dawn/Spic? Do you put any kind of treatment on it or anything? Only reason I ask is because most RV roof cleaners also have some kind of a treatment stuff sitting right by it on the shelf at the store that you are supposed to apply after the cleaning. Or is that just another way for them to get our $?

I'm not aware of any treatment recommendations from the roof membrane manufacturers. What I read was simply wash with mild soap that contains no petroleum distillates. I use Meguiars Deep Crystar car was soap on the roof and sides. Works great, very inexpensive, and won't strip the wax I labor for hours to get on there.

Most rubber roof manufacturers don't recommend "treatments" just to clean it a few times a year.

I was told to use polmolive dish soap the most basic non fragent one they sell. However I did go to the Syracuse RV show they were selling products made by RELIABLE 1. A ton of people were buying it. I bought the wax ,cleaner, general in between wipe down cleaner and the roof protectant. Looks like really good stuff.Check it out at www.reliableproductsonline.com. I wanna do alittle more research on it, but like I said it was selling like crazy and I wanted a wax and stuff so I bought it. It has a money back guarantee the guy said.

For the roof I wash with Dawn dish soap. The walls are done with Miguires carwash soap. I hear they have one with a wax in the solution. I would like to try Mcguire’s it as I hate to wax that monster. I tried Turtle Wax brand carwash soap with wax last year and I did not think it was worth a hill of beans.

No roof treatments for me!
