Campers in hurricanes

With the uncertainty of Matthew's path in mind, I was wondering how those of you in hurricane-prone areas keep your camper relatively safe. I know nothing can help when you have a Hugo or an Andrew, but I was thinking of putting some stakes in the ground (the ones with the spirals that screw into the dirt) along either side and run some rope or straps over the top to anchor it a bit more. Probably not a whole lot of help but it may keep it from toppling over.

Anyone have any experience in this?

I fill up the fresh water tank. This does two things, gives you fresh water in the event of an outage in your residence and helps weigh down the trailer and give it a lower center of gravity, less likely to turn over.

Just a thought, if you can't go camping, relocate and stow the TT out of the area until the weather clears. These things leak enough in a minimal rain.

The only sure fire solution is to hook up and move it. At least with hurricanes we have plenty of notice.

We usually leave with valuables and go where it isn't.
This time We are already in N Georgia.
Hugo in 1989 flipped my TT on its side in the back yard.

A hurricane is no fun. The winds are fierce. I went with my boat while living the dream through Irene in 2011 and Sandy in 2012. This is what I would do with a camper. You are lucky because a camper is like a house on wheels. Hook up the camper to the towing vehicle and get the heck out of the area. The neighbor will be jealous. Go where it is peaceful and nice. Watch the hurricane on TV while having a drink and snacks. A bugger like Matthew (Category 4) will be hell and a camper has little chance to stay in one piece.

I hope we won't have to prep for a hurricane but it's always nice to hear from people who have been through one with a camper. We will probably pack up the cats and turtles and head upstate.

And we sure won't leave the day before - we got stuck in horrible traffic when Floyd was threatening. We stayed in one spot for 2 hours north of Georgetown until we heard on the radio that Floyd was veering west. It took us no time to get back home. Charleston has grown exponentially since then so I can't imagine what the exodus would look like now.

Due to a lot of complications, we are hunkering down and sticking it out. We have filled up the water tank (good suggestion!) and have the camper parked on the front lawn with four anchors screwed into the ground - two on the tongue and two on the back bumper attached to those inverted triangles. I guess that's what the triangles on the bumper is for??
Anyway, there are a lot of trees around and I hope none fall on our house or our house on wheels. And we do have insurance that does cover hurricane damage, so I guess we're set for now.'

We just came the worst of Mathew ,we parked the camper next to the house and filled the fresh tank. We now have a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. It a lot cooler in the camper than house. We survived 110 mph winds. The generator is doing is running the fridge in the house and the camper .

Our 28BHBE made it thru the night, got some near 100 MPH winds from the western edge of the eye wall. Only lost a Red side market light cover. It is tucked in between houses so that helped. Got a little of the red band around the eye wall is it rotated around. Very lucky nothing impaled it and since we are without power it is nice to have it onsite for the Fridge etc. Rode the storm out at the house so got to keep an eye on everything throughout the night.

I intend to fill the water tank tomorrow in case we lose power and need to move into it for a day or so. It's stored in a wind rated metal building next to the house.

I hope everyone makes it through safe and unscathed. Up here in the DC area we aren't expecting anything from Matthew. Its usually the female named hurricanes that are the worst for us... go figure.

Glad y'all have survived! So far our trees have stayed in place but the winds have not died down yet so fingers still crossed. I keep hearing thumps on the house, yikes! Better go now.
