Campground Water Safe?

Does anyone drink campground water when traveling? If so, what are you filtering it with? We have been buying gallons for coffee and our pup, bottled for drinking.

Sure. Nothing.

We don't filter our well water at home. Of course our well water is on the same aquifer as a leading bottled water company. It tastes marvelous right out of the ground.

If the CG water tastes bad( and that HAS happened with our sensitive water palate) we will buy a gallon of bottled water for drinking. No need for cooking.

Personally despise city water with all its chemically taste. Sulfur water is another no as it ruins the coffee!

You can disinfect suspect water with a tiny bit of bleach or use a gravity water filter like we have for backpacking.

We drink it. Never had a problem. We use a Carbon filter. Most places we go use well water or a city water supply. If it has a bad taste, we always have some bottled water for coffee and drinking.

The only time I worry about water is if I am thinking about drinking from a stream or the water spigot at a dump site. Neither of which, I would ever do. Other than that, the US has not yet become a 3rd world country and the water is safe to drink. I also don't usually bother to filter my water, either at home or on the road. 60 yrs and have never gotten sick from drinking the water.

People in places like Flint, MI might disagree with you on that.

We usually filter the CG water for washing and such, and take bottled for drinking and making coffee - primarily because I prefer the taste.

There was a thread on this recently but I can't find it now.

I think it really depends on you and how tolerant of "foreign" microbes your stomach is. Even traveling a few hundred miles you will get different microbes and minerals in the water than your system is used to. For most people that's not a problem. For others it can mean a few days of diarrhea. It's the same reason why they say when traveling overseas "don't drink the water". It's not that it's bad. It's because its different than what your system knows.

This happened to me once. Two and half days in the camper while everyone else on the trip was out having a good time. Never again. We drink and cook with all bottled water now. A gallon of spring water averages $1 just about everywhere.

Berkey water filter or the big 5 gallon RO water jugs with a hand pump on top. I’m not trusting my health to chance by drinking water from an unknown source if possible.

To say that all the water in America is completely safe to drink is completely naive or blind wishful thinking.

I drink what ever comes out of the tap. I had a whole house filter, setup to use with the garden hose. I liked it as I could purchase what ever filter media I wanted, and the filters where cheaper than the blue RV ones. I could open it up and dry it out. But we have not had a campsite with city water connection in probably 5 years or more. It is a bit of a pain to use it just to fill the FW tank.

So no more filter for us. We do tend to carry a case of water bottles just incase.

Now the funny, my son does not like bottled water, as he says it has no taste. He prefers ether city water or well water.

I drink the campground water in most places we go, especially when staying in our home state. We have some friends who own a campground here in NY. I have a lot more confidence in the safety of campground water after they told us all of the paperwork, periodic inspections, and frequent water testing the health department requires.

Still, I always keep some bottled water on hand, just in case.

I use the blue charcoal filter for washing and for my dogs.
Bottled water for coffee & drinking, etc.
So far no problems

We drink it all the time. We use the inline blue Camco charcoal filters on the incoming water line. Never had issues..

But, I use to drink out of the garden hose as a kid too... That third arm I grew comes in really handy when doing projects!!

Surprising how many people refuse to drink campground water but do not use bottled water for showers or washing dishes.

I use the blue Camco filter at the spigot primarily for sediment filtering and a quality charcoal filter in the whole house filter. I change out both filters every 60 days at the most or whenever we have been to a CG with a high level of sulfur in the water.

Or drink a significant amount of alcohol, and aren't concerned, but they worry about the water in their coffee?

We've always had a filter inline with our TT. Generic carbon filter does the job for us.

We have a filter that we place at the TT connection to the water supply. We believe that any of the owners operating a campground are going to be monitoring their water supply for safety if they want to stay in business. We filter because older campgrounds, just like older homes, may be using galvanized pipes which can release rust etc. We have never had a problem at any campground except some discoloration after major rain storms. If we are concerned we boil it or run it through an additional filter.

We buy bottled water for anything that gets swallowed — drinking, cooking, coffee etc. but I sanitize my lines and use a blue Camco filter for the city connect and we wash and shower with it. Even use it to brush our teeth, so I suppose if it was unhealthy, we would have been affected. Never had a problem.

DW whines about the taste of the water at the campground, but has no problem drinking water at a nearby restaurant that gets its water from the same source.

I got tired of buying bottled water, so saved five 1-gallon jugs that I fill up from the tap at home and take with us. We have an Igloo five-gallon water cooler that we fill with ice and water for drinking at the campsite.

Nothing irks me more that seeing all those plastic bottles in the dumpster at the campground. If you must do the bottled water thing, please recycle.
