Camping in cool weather

Looking for a little advise.

I am heading for the south west (Balloon Fiesta, Zion & Bryce) - the forecast is calling for lows around 29 F with highs in the upper 60's. It's my first time using the TT in these temp's.

Would you be concerned about the pipes freezing at night? just not sure how exposed all of my pipes are? I will have the heater running.

My thoughts are that I will only be below 32 for a couple of hours and that the heat of the trailer will radiate enough to keep things from freezing?

If you have had experience with this please respond.

Happy Camping & Safe travels.

A dip below freezing at night is nothing to worry about when the daytime temps rebound well above freezing. When you have to worry is when the temp stays well below freezong for extended periods of time.

Water starts to freeze at 32*, it doesn’t just instantly freeze. The cold has to remove the daytime heat from everything before things can freeze. You’ll be fine, if you’re worried about freezing let a faucet drip extremely slow.

I agree, you'll probably be fine.

I camped at deer camp one season in my trailer, and one night it got down into the mid 20s. Something froze because I went to go potty when I woke up and got no water. A little while after sunrise, things had thawed and started moving again. Whatever happened, there was no permanent damage; I went over everything with a fine-tooth comb when I got home and all was well.

You could always put a lamp under the rig near any potential freeze areas just to be sure. On my old trailer, that would have been the supply line from the fresh tank to the water pump.

It's always good to include the make, model and year of your RV and tow vehicle to get best advice.

A lot of trailers now have covered bottoms that slow freezing.

You could also turn off the water and drain all pressure off before you call it a night. A gallon jug will do for flushing at night.

I'm guessing your from Farmington MN.

We camp early and late season, usually the last trip is MEA weekend, and often experience much cooler temperatures than that. You will be fine! If we have electricity we tend to use an electric space heater over the propane.

We do not have an enclosed underbelly and have never had any issues, not even with the outside shower (cover always is closed). Do not leave the hose(s) connected at night, or you will have a frozen mess in the morning. I recommend putting them away at night.

We fill our FW tank full, as it has a huge thermal mass, at minimum we use that water at night. All of our water pipes run inside our TT. I keep the cabinet doors ajar that have pipes running through them, so that the heat can get into the cabinet. I never leave a faucet dripping.

22 degrees is probably the coldest temps we have experienced at night, and it has always warmed up to at least the low 40's during the day.

Interesting post. I'm staying in my Jayco 264BHW that has the cold weather package. I'm in Colorado where Sub-Zero temps are common in the winters. I'll be installing a skirt and probably some heat tape. At first I'll be just filling the fresh water tank until I get an H2O line installed.

Yes, significant time well below the freezing mark is a whole different animal than the occasional dip below the line for a couple hours.
