Can I add a tow hitch to a 2012 Jay Flight swift 198 rd to pull a boat?
Well, we are about to pull the trigger on a 2012 Jay Flight swift 198 rd, and I imagine that this question has been asked many a time, but I cant seem to find the thread so I thought I'd ask it again. How many do or can you pull a boat behind a 2012 Jay Flight swift 198 rd? I have looked and looked and looked and I cant find if the frame is strong enough to add a trailer hitch assembly to pull the boat. I know I can pull (triple trailer) in most all the states around Idaho where I am at, but, I cant find any information on if the frame is strong enough to add the hitch and pull the boat. Can anyone help me on this? Thanks.

So what you are saying is you have a truck pulling a travel trailer then you want to tow a boat behind that. Correct. It is illegal in most state to tow anything behind a travel trailer. If you are towing a 5th wheel then you can tow another trailer behind that.

1st welcome aboard.
X2, I only know one state this is legal.
If it is legal, and you want to do it, I would strongly recommend a good welding shop to do the work.
I suspect not all tt frames are strong enough for a boat trailer to be pulled be hind it.

I know for a fact that well over half of the states allow triple pulling with a regular trailer. We had a trailer a few years back, a Nash, and we did it all over the west without an issue. Always made sure it was legal before we took off and you see them up n down the interstate out west all the time. There are many websites that provide information on triple trailer with a travel trailer not just a motor home. Here is one of them - https://www.gillettesinterstaterv.co...ty-and-safety/

this is easier to read:
https://rv-roadtrips.thefuntimesguid...triple_towing/
but does not answer the OP question. Knowing how easy the frame can be bent I would hesitate. We have a 195RB which got a bent frame from a pothole albeit a granddaddy pothole.

r2martin In Arizona it is not legal to tow triples with a travel trailer. With a 5th wheel it is legal. Just checked with Rv trip wizard. The one thing that might get you in trouble towing triples is the weight of the 3rd vehicle being towed [might need brakes if over a certain weight] and the total length on all three vehicles.

The think OP is correct, in the Northwest, two trailer towing is allowed in Idaho, Montana and Utah, but illegal in Washington, Oregon and Wyoming. I think Oregon allows commercial triples, but not double Rv’s.
It would convenient to tow a double/triple from one place to the next as long as you knew the route and never a need to backup....
I would also suggest a frame shop for the install.

There are boats and there are BOATS. So some of the advice is probably too generic in that regard. Are you thinking an 16' aluminium with a 9.9 hanging off the back or a fiberglass behemoth with quad 200s?
The frame was not designed with towing in mind. It was designed with the mindset of how cheap can we build this to function as a trailer. There are enough threads around RV forums discussion problems with hanging a bike rack on the bumper, hanging a boat is a whole new level.
Can you do it? Yes. The smaller the boat the smaller the issues will be. Let us know how it turns out.

I tandem towed with a TT here in Indiana for about 10 years. Never had a problem. The hitch on the TT was installed by a very reputable shop in Indianapolis.

Even if pulling a trailer behind the trailer was permissible, I doubt it would be much fun after the first 2 or 3 miles. With the extra electrical for lights, hitch, tires, etc the risks of something going wrong sky rocket. Additionally, due to the travel trailer being so wide, the visibility of the boat would be greatly reduced and only improved a little even with the use of an observation camera on the TT. Not my idea of a fun day towing.
