Can I put black water in a blue tote?

ok, so stupid question. Been camping all my life, didn't pay attention to what my dad did when I was young, but since I've been an adult with a pop-up we limited the use of the cassette toilet to night time and no #2, using the campground bathrooms for that. Also used campground showers as pop-up had none. Now we have the travel trailer and have pretty much used the same system, though I have used the bathroom fully and showered, the rest of the family are male and they continued to use the prior procedures. Used both tanks fully for all of us when in a sewer site.

Went to one of our favorite spots and could not use the campground facilities due to COVID-19. Used the blue tote to empty the grey once during the 5 days there and dumped at the end, utilizing the GI shower method and we're all good at not using too much water in the sinks. As for the black tank, it was definitely full (looking with a flashlight, the heck with the sensors) at the end of the 5 days (4 people). Now we're going back for an entire week and I'm wondering if it's ok to use the blue tote to dump the black tank mid trip.

Do you all use the blue tote to empty your black tanks?

Yes sir. It is perfectly fine to use a blue boy to dump your black tank and transport it to the dump station . Just be sure to give it a good rinse when you are finished or the smell will be unbelievable after a few days in the sun (just don't ask how I found that out......lol)

Our waste tank is blue too. Dump the black first, followed by the grey.

Black tank is usually smaller. That is what my dad told me blue tank was for.

Yep, Use my grey 28 gallon Camco Rhino tank for both Black and grey tanks. And yes, we do #2 in the black tank too!

Just make sure you know your capacity on the black tank ant the blue tote. If you try to put 30 gallons of black water in a 20 gallon tote, you’re gonna have a bad day. ;p

I close the valve and check the level in the tote every so often while filling so I don't have a "bad day".

I use a clear hose fitting so I can see how full the tank is getting. I stop about 3/4 full so I have some room to flush grey water thru the hose.

We only use the tote on one trip a year. All of our other trips we have a full hookup site.

Not if you ever plan on putting drinking water in it again.. lol. Yes you can use your blue tote. just keep it for that for life... We use TR Bowlin's method to keep our tanks running and used to use it in our portable roller - I would use a batch in your blue tank as well.

Also keep in mind that water weighs about 8.3 lbs per gallon so that 20 gallion tote is going to weigh about 166 lbs when full. If any lifting is going to be required to dump it (dump hole surrounded by curb and hose to short to reach hole) at least one end of the tote will have to be lifted over the curb to do the dumping.

Won't help you now but my number one rule is I do not camp anyplace that I have to haul black water to a dump in a tote. Sorry, just is not going to happen. We dry camp for long periods with the family and for hunting adventures and if the black tank fills, it is a shovel and a trip behind a tree (has never happened) but no way I hall S$*% in a tote to a dump!

We're just getting geared up for using a tote and realized our 21 gallon Rhino is 35lbs alone. So full it'll be around 200 lbs. Since we have to travel a few miles to dump at this park, I'll be putting the empty tank in the truck bed and filling it from the trailer using the Flojet pump.

That’s the perfect use for a flowjet or equivalent

My black tank is 30 gallons so I bought a 42 gallon 4 pneumatic tired Blue Tote which I can attach to my bumper hitch and tow anywhere! No lifting, carry 10' & 4' hoses to dump station along with a couple of 4x4 wood blocks which come in handy! I installed a visual fill bubble gauge on the vent cap to prevent overfilling. All works great.

A quick funny and somewhat embarrassing story for you. I also have a 42 gal Barker tote. Earlier this year, I was attempting to pull it to the dump. As I started down a hill, I looked to my left to see my tote passing me to the left and starting to gain speed down the hill.

To anyone watching, I must have looked absolutely ridiculous running after my tank of poo........

A bungee strap to hold it to the hitch is now used every time I pull it anywhere.
