Carrying bikes on the spare tire
Hey guys,
I have a 26BHS with the spare mounted to the rear bumper. Is there a problem carrying 2 mountain bikes on a bike rack made for a jeep mounted to the spare tire? Is that too much weight for the tire mount or the 4 inch tube bumper?
Thanks

Probably. Your manual should have something about the weight limitations. Or email Jayco directly and ask.

The back bumpers on the Jayco trailers will not support bikes. I made my own bike rack and mounted it to the TT's rear cross over frame and use the bumper only for eliminating some of the bounce. There are pictures on the internet of TT's with their bike racks lying on the ground with the bumper still attached to the bike rack after it broke away from the TT frame.
They have bike rack support (connect to the frame) you may want to look into. Something like the one below.. prices start around $120.

I would not advise it, and I'm sure Jayco wouldn't either.
Your spare tire holder is made to carry a spare tire and not two mountain bikes.
Your trailer's rear bumper isn't made to support that much (bouncing) weight.

That's a shame, I'd read before that the rear bumpers on TTs could be weak. When I looked at it all welded to the frame I was hoping this was an issue with older models and Jayco had done something to fix the issue. Sounds like it's time to get the welder out. 😈

Thanks guys, that's what I was figuring with the amount of bounce the one time I did it. Good thing I listened to that little voice in my head and stopped carrying the bikes like that.

Ted,
What year is your 26 BHS? IS there a tab on the botto of the frame, near the bumper? IF so, you should be able to order the option factory rear cargo hitch. It is rated for up to 300lbs, though I couldn't confirm exactly at what distance the rating is for. We have carried 4 bikes (2 Specialized 26" full suspension, and 2 box store 20" full suspension without any issues on 2 or 3 trips last year. Our bike rack is a tray style, like a roof rack, that requires removal of the front wheel.
Or as Screwby posted, either (have someone) custom build one, or buy the one linked above that is a universal fit, frame mounted hitch. Just double check your bike rack to make sure it is ok to use on an rv. Only a few (maybe only 1 or 2???) rate their racks for rv use.
Just make sure you are not hanging to much weight out the rear of the trailer that you no longer have adequate tw!!! If you unload to much tw, you could have a serious sway issue.... Just use caution, and use the CAT Scales to verify you have the proper tw.
Good call on not using the spare tire rack. Chances are at some point it the rear bumper would end up failing. It isn't much different than the receiver hitch that bolts on just the bumper. Those usually fail at some point as well....
