I hate that you got a bad Champion. I bought my first one in February for the occasional dry camping and for emergency power around the house. I have not got to use it yet camping. I make sure I run it and use it around the house for 4-5 hours every other week just to keep it in working order. If you like the Champion features, you could always buy local and have them start it up before leaving the store. I got mine at HomeDepot. It was assembled when I picked it up. We put the oil in and fired it up at the store before leaving.

Good luck with what ever you decide!

Satisfied

I bought a duel fuel 2800/3100 duel fuel champion from Costco.com In Jan 2016. Works perfectly. But being from Costco I still have the 100% satisfaction guarantee to send it back for a refund if needed.

Am I to understand that you paid 1K for a Champion 3500 dual fuel, is that correct?
Brother, the MSRP is between $300 - $400.

I have 2 Champions. 1 is a gas only 3500 about 7 years old w/325 hours and runs great. The other is a dual fuel 9500 I got on sale at Campers World 2 yrs ago that also runs great. I service them myself according to mfgr. specs. For the price I'd give it another go. If you paid $1K at Cabellas I'd definitely shop elsewhere.

And yes Cabela's does have to honor their sale.(and they are) ... again.. it does not work. You cant sell something that does not work. As stated.. THEY have been great with about 3 different phones call to their professional phone support personal.

In reality they don't have to take it back. Cabela's could tell you to take it to a repair center or send it out for you before they consider a refund. However Cabela's is an excellent company for their customer service.

Again my intent here is to illustrate the shortfall, in my experience with Champion.. I know they have a very zealous following, and my small feedback is meant to counter that assumption.. take or leave it is up to you.
Obviously there was a problem with communications. The rep apparently wasn't listening and you may not have explained it well. Yes, the rep is right...the unit shouldn't run if there are no status lights. But if there is an issue, it is possible to the generator could run with no output. This type of issue is very rare and the rep probably never "seen" it before.

However this something for us to be aware of. Thanks

My champion from Cabelas came with bent motor mounts. It was purchased online and drop shipped. Literally! Returned to Cabelas and reordered another, no problems. UPS driver shoved the second out the back of the truck on my driveway even after my son offered to help unload. Second was undamamged, luckily, and has run intermittently for several years without issue.

Where did you find a 3500 dual fuel inverter for $300-$400? And what year? Retail is $1099. 7 years ago that may have been true but not these days.

I've had my Champion for a year and a half and it's been great. The little support that I needed from Champion in the beginning was a very positive experience. I would buy another Champion without hesitation.

Sorry OP, that you had a bad experience. I really believe that this is not the norm. Nice to hear that the retailer handled it so well.

I think "Beware" is a bit of a stretch for this thread. Lemons happen on assembly lines. Many Many folks are super happy with their Champions. I've got one and it runs like a top every time. It stinks you got a bad one. But I wouldn't hesitate to just take it back and swap out for a new one. It sounds like that's the simplest option for you and I can just about promise you'll be happy with the second one.

If you find the 3500 Dual Fuel Champion invertor for $300 new .. PLEASE post the link and information.... as many here would jump all over that deal. You might be referencing an open frame..

However, if you do know where all can find a new one at that price... please make everyone here aware.

Thanks

Alternative

One word: Solar. I have 4 Exide 245 amp hour six volt batteries. Each pair is wired in series, parallel to the other pair. Together with a 2000 watt inverter I run everything except air conditioning, can camp without sun or power for about three days. Also no generator noise.

With the emoticon I assume you are joking. My wife and I do a lot of boondocking, hunting, and competing with our retrievers on a national level. Our home is in Oregon. If we are in a part of the country where we require air conditioning in the trailer, we stay where there is power. This is not usually the case. I can operate all kitchen, entertainment systems, and household appliances without a generator. If I park under trees, the system is good for 3 days. If partial sun, more, etc.
