Talking Chemicals in Black Water Tank

Do you need to add chemicals to the black water tank to break down the solids and to keep the smell down. If so, what do you use?
We are finally getting our TT moved to its permanent site in two weeks. The snow in central PA is now gone and the ground is drying out and it is now time for the fun (relaxing) to begin.

Chemicals in Black Tank

I have used a solution of Pine Sol and CalgonBath Beads for years with no problems at all. The Pine Sol to keeps the odor down and the Calgon lines the tank so all solids easily slid out. I am new to this forum also. Designer 36RLTS and F350 King Ranch Dually.

I never use chemicals, a waste of money. I do have the flush out system and use it often to flush out the tanks.

We used to. Then we forgot once. Nothing changed. So we haven't used anything since. Maybe if the trailer sat in hot weather for an extended period of time it would make a difference.

Welcome to the Jayco Owners Forum Bhoyles! Never thought of using Pine Sol, but like Hammerdown, we don't use chemicals. We do keep a small amount of water in the tank with a little liquid dish detergent when we are on the road though

I also use the TST Orange power, but it does not too that much....Do you have sewer in your new site? If so, just empty it every 3 or 4 days and you will never know it is there.

As someone else mentoned I can't tell if anything is added to the tank or not. I just add a LOT of water after I dump and never have had a problem.

I just add water after I drain...of course when you hook up at your site...leave it closed and allow it to fill..I know everyone knows this but with new folks you always have to mention it just in case...I know first hand the problem if you dont let it fill up...

I do only if camping for longer periods in the summer (hot) without hookups, or during a really long period of storage, but thats about it.

What I do to prevent smells is that I have a clear section between the "stinky slinky" and the TT, and use a Tornado tank flusher, and I make sure the tanks are "truly" empty - sometimes even after it looks like it's all out, and then I close the tank, run the Tornado for a bit and open it up I can see "leftovers" sneaking out.

After 12 years of full timeing, the best thing I've found is cheap dishwashing liquid. I use the green apple from dollar general, 2 bucks for about a half gallon. I also have the water flush out too and its great!

It's interesting to hear this conversation. We just settled on a Jayco 29L today and during the orientation training, they made it sounds as if putting a chemical in the black water tank is a must. Good to know it's not the end of the world if you don't, as long as you monitor things.

TST orange single shots after each dump with 2 gal fresh water. I've used other "green" chemicals but none keep the hot summer stench down like the TST. Amazon has them for the same price as WM at $10.88 with free del.

I also put Calgon water soeftner in every 2-3 dumps before I drive home to coat the walls with film to keep the sticking down.

We don't use any chemical in the black tank and have no problems with odor. In the summer we sometimes use Odorlos in the galley tank, which I have found can be far smellier than the black tank.

I use Pure Power, 2 ozs. does 40 gallons and breaks down paper. I use 1 Ply paper that can be bought cheap and this stuff breaks it down. They have stopped making the green colour and now make blue which does have a nice smell to it.

When I first bought my Jayco I used the blue packs that you drop down but in a short time I had a real bad sewer smell. Since using Pure Power I have not had a smell problem.
